Injured football player Abdel Banda created SBIG to give back to community, move forward with life

When Notre Dame senior Abdel Banda suffered a career ending football injury during his sophomore year he didn't know in what direction he wanted to take his life. After some searching, he and his friend Thomas Killian, Jr., created Students Bridging the Information Gap (SBIG), a non-profit organization based in New Jersey.

SMC to donate portrait of Sister Madeleva

The Saint Mary's Senior Gift Campaign announced the Class of 2008 will donate a portrait of Sr. M. Madeleva Wolff to the College as they graduate to honor their experience on campus. The new portrait will replace the current one in the lobby of Madeleva Hall, which has begun to show signs of disrepair.

Indiana state treasurer Richard Mourdock spoke about the opposition Abraham Lincoln's presidency faced at the College Republican's inaugural Lincoln Day dinner Tuesday night. Mourdock described Abraham Lincoln as a president who succeeded in the face of challenges.

400 students improve 23 South Bend homes

Around 400 students woke up early last Saturday to help make a difference in the South Bend community through the city's Rebuilding Together St. Joseph County project. Rebuilding Together is a not-for-profit partnership between local government and business volunteers as well as other nonprofit organizations in the area to help refurbish homes and neighborhoods in the South Bend area, according to the project's Web site.

COR: Leaders plan college council

Reish, Grant contemplate starting organization of midwest universities

Notre Dame student body president Bob Reish and vice president Grant Schmidt announced they have begun taking steps to establish a national college to Council of Representatives (COR) at their meeting Tuesday. Reish said the purpose of the organization, which would be founded by Notre Dame's student government and whose first meeting would be on campus possibly sometime next year, would be "to discuss not only topics within their schools but also national topics.

Board of Governance: Group discusses issues with CCAC

Student body vice president Sarah Falvey announced that she attended the third Community/Campus Action Coalition (CCAC) meeting as a proxy for student body president Mickey Gruscinski at the Board of Governance (BOG) meeting Tuesday. At the meeting the CCAC addressed issues including approving the mission statement of the coalition, she said.

The realities of reality TV

Normally, I'm not a fan of reality television. I find shows like "The Bachelor," "A Shot at Love with Tila Tequila" and "The Hills" to be completely pointless and shallowly vapid. The only exceptions I make to this overall dislike are for shows like the "Real World/Road Rules Challenge" (one of my life's ambitions is to become one of the people who sits around a table in the MTV studios and comes up with competitions like "Mexican blanket rolling" for crazy, money-obsessed people to win money), Rock of Love (Bret Michaels may be balding and old, but he's still hot) and my new found obsession- MTV's new reality show "The Paper.
