To many Notre Dame students’ frustration, Saint Mary’s students will also vie for the 2,500 tickets made available for students to the BCS National Championship Bowl Game vs. Alabama to be held in Miami, Fla., on Jan. 7.

Junior Katie Fusco said she is uncomfortable with Saint Mary’s students being included in the Notre Dame student lottery, especially with an anonymous Notre Dame alumnus donating to lower the price of student tickets. She said she has nothing against the University’s sister institution, especially since her mother attended Saint Mary’s.

“My mom thinks it’s ridiculous too,” Fusco said. “What bothers me is that we have this concerned alumnus who has donated money, and Saint Mary’s students … are going to reap the benefits of half-price tickets, especially when they don’t even go to Notre Dame.

“They don’t even contribute money back to the University. It’s our institution. I think they should have their own lottery of, say, 200 tickets or a smaller number within their own student body so it’s not a free-for-all.”

Fusco said she thinks Saint Mary’s students should have some sort of access to student tickets.

“They do support the team and they do cheer on the team at football games,” she said. “But at the end of the day, it comes down to the fact that we’re two different schools. ... I pay $50,000 to come here and they don’t even pay that.”

Junior Marcus Liddell said he was enthused when he discovered an anonymous alumnus donated funds to reduce the student lottery ticket price.

“I was gearing myself up to pay $350 for tickets, and then I found out they’re going to be half of that,” he said. “I think it’s a symptom of the great alumni network and the connection there is here, especially with football. And I’m glad to see the alumni still care.”

He said Saint Mary’s students should be included in the Notre Dame student ticket lottery.

“They have a right to participate fully,” Liddell said. “They’re part of the football team too.”

Senior Jake Coleman said even though he did not enter the lottery, he understood why students were frustrated.

“They might be frustrated because they think the priority should be given to students who go to Notre Dame,” he said. “A lot of my friends entering the lottery will be disappointed if they don’t get tickets.”

Coleman said the anonymous donation was a tremendous act of charity.

“I guess it’s almost predictable for Notre Dame alumni,” he said. “I found it predictable that a Notre Dame alumnus would want to help Notre Dame students, but that doesn’t take away from their generosity.

Sophomore Carmen Casillas said even though she also didn’t apply for tickets, she thought Notre Dame students have a right to be upset about their diminished chances in the lottery.

“I just think that Notre Dame students deserve their tickets a little more,” she said. “We are actually at the University. We are the students at the University going to the national championship. And they’re only from the sister [school]. If anything, Notre Dame students should get first priority. Saint Mary’s … students shouldn’t be given equal footing.”

It is unfortunate that current students at ND, who obviously are not from SMC/ND families, have no idea of the historical connection between the two schools that has been in place since both schools were created. I think the ticket situation has brought the issue of defining the connection between Saint Mary's and ND to the surface and that it needs to be addressed. The issue has gone far beyond comments (some of the comments directed to Saint Mary's students are very concerning btw) on these articles to one that needs to be dealt with immediately by the administration of both schools. The comments on these pages are being discussed by many parents and alumni in my community so I can imagine that it is an issue of concern for other alumni and parents also. Saint Mary's women are very high acheiving successful people who should not be made to feel second rate by anyone. It's time for the administration to step in and clearly define the SMC/ND relationship so it's CRYSTAL CLEAR to all current students, future students, alumni and parents.

My overriding question is: where else in the world of higher learning does a school get to be de-facto members of a community simply because it is across the street and run by the same organization? SMC likes to pride itself on their own programs, student body, and athletic teams. So why is it only when it's convenient for them do they feel the need to identify as members of the Notre Dame community? How about paying the same tuition as ND students? How about coming up with the same donations year in and year out to support your school?

Commencement isn't even close to the same thing as the nationalchampionship... It's a part of a graduation ceremony where family members watch individual children graduate. Students don't have the same claim over watching the football team play as a parent does to watching their childs graduation. Plus many of those ND parents are also SMC parents as well. Or should an SMC parent who is a ND aunt not be allowed to attend commencement over a ND aunt? What would make one aunt's presence more important to their niece/nephew? Ps. Many of the present and past players have SMC mothers.

So no SMC "supporters" want to answer my question? If tickets to ND commencement were limited so we needed a lottery for parent tickets, would we have the same uproar from ND parents if SMC parents were allotted the same opportunity in a lottery for parent tickets to attend the ceremony? Using the same logic that I've seen all over the boards, because of the SMC traditions, the gift of the Dome, the fact that their daughters might have taken classes or band ND, or that they have many ND/SMC relatives, SMC parents should be entitled the same, equal right in a lottery for a "parent ticket" to attend ND commencement as an ND parent. No comments?

Clarification: to all of the current ND women (who feel that Saint Mary's should not be part of the ticket lottery).

Oh, and to "Silly", I really never intended to be rude to you. My apologies. Just a reaction to an old exchange within the Community.

Best to all.

SMC '82, there are just as many men as women upset. Please do not allow your stereotype of ND women vs. SMC women to permeate your comments, as this is an issue that has nothing to do with tensions between different "factions" of women that may or may not exist.

To all of the current undergrad Notre Dame women: I find it humorous that you think that a Saint Mary's woman winning a ticket would be the same as "denying an ND student a seat at the game". Before any of you were even born, the gripe used to be that each female ND student enrolled was "denying a seat under the dome" to a deserving potential male ND student.

The more things change... the more they stay the same.

Let us all just embrace change and each other! Relax. All is well.

I cannot believe the arrogance, superiority, and sense of entitlement of some of the students commenting on this article. That's not how it was when I graduated from ND in 1976. Once you all leave South Bend and (hopefully) get jobs in the 'real world' you might find out that it's not where you graduated from that matters, rather it is the person you have grown to become that matters. And I would really have my doubts about you.

To Quote Anonomous 'I have one thing to say. I took a 2007 Sugar Bowl ticket out of the hands of an ND student after winning them in the student lottery as a SMC student. And I SOLD them. To non ND people at that. So I took tickets away from ND students and reading this makes me damn happy I did. Not all Notre Dame students feel this way, not all Notre Dame women feel this way. Get off your high horse, we have dual degree seeking students, we accept your men in our education classes, your student newspaper covers BOTH schools. Why not just put up a locked gate around your campus. How dare "outsiders" be allowed on it

You do know that what you did was against ticket policy.....you "scalped" an ND ticket....bad bad bad

Stop using the word deserve. Not a single ONE of you deserve a ticket. These tickets are a blessing not a right. Students at both school have already been blessed with the ability to receive wonderful college educations. Be grateful for what you have because so many couldn't even imagine what it would be like to live your lives. As an ND alum and parent paying tuition at both schools I suggest you all be grateful that you have the luxury to complain about such a trivia subject.

Lol - "classy & fabulous", who is so gleefully crowing about being one of the many St. Mary's girls dating the Notre Dame football team, singlehandedly reinforced the classic Smick chick stereotype. Hop back on the sluttle and ride back across the street, "girlfriend". Snap.

To "SMC Alum" (Tues Dec 4 19:41) - Get a grip. Katie Fusco is entitled to her opinion, and many in the actual ND community (ND students and graduates of ND -- those of us with a degree from the University of Notre Dame) agree with her. For you to bully a student who may have been asked a question that she answered off the top of her head is ridiculous. You belittle her ("look here, honey"), call her names ("ignorant", "disrespectful jerk" -- really?), and come across as hysterical and disrespectful. To top it all off you tell HER to lighten the hell up? Defensive much? Katie isn't the insecure one, you are. No, I am afraid you didn't validate yourself at all.

A Nurse Anesthetist, huh? Nurse Ratched, maybe.

The BCS title game allots 17,000 tickets out of the ~75,000 at the stadium to each team. The rest of the tickets go to BCS sponsors, bowl affliliates, media (ESPN, etc.). Students get a chance at only 2,500 of our 17,000. Although it is true that ND home game tickets are available to SMC students, that does not interfere with any Notre Dame students' ability to get tickets. In this case, it does, so it makes sense that only ND students should be able to enter the student ticket lottery for the BCS Championship. Why? Only ND students are students at the school that is playing in the game.

Anonymous at 6:25: I agree. Keep in mind that even among the alumni, not everyone is eligible for the tickets. Only the "contributing" alumni receive access to some of those tickets. The ones that definitely would have the money to pay for it on their own. I would be interested to see an entire football ticket overhaul, one that took into account need, ability to make it to the game, and even football knowledge (I've seen many students sit in the student section and talk through the entire game, and it's really sad).

I find it interesting that people are complaining so much about the SMC tickets, when these will end up accounting for a relatively small number of tickets. And yet nobody is willing to touch the question of why the University was awarded 17,000 face value tickets and only 2500 of those are going to actual current students. It's not like these are the only tickets available, they're are plenty $1500 dollar ones on stubhub, and I'm sure a much higher percentage of the people being awarded the 14000+ share can afford one of these without significant financial strain than those amongst the 2500 share. Just something to think about.
