As they await the much-anticipated announcement of the ticket lottery winners, Saint Mary’s students said they are thankful to be included in the student body pool for the BCS National Championship Game against Alabama on Jan. 7 in Miami.

Junior Kat Sullivan said she has been a Notre Dame football fan since before she could walk. Her dad attended the University and her mom is a Saint Mary’s alumna. Sullivan said her friendships in the joint community are an important part of her experience in the student section.

“Cheering for the Fighting Irish is something that will always be a part of who I am,” Sullivan said. “Some of my best memories of college thus far have been watching the Fighting Irish go ‘onward to victory.’ We all share one common bond — our love of the Notre Dame football team. At the end of the day, the only people who should be fighting are the Fighting Irish.”

Saint Mary’s students receive access to a “proportional” quantity of BCS National Championship Game tickets that is equivalent to their percentage of the total combined Notre Dame and Saint Mary’s student population, according to an email statement from the Notre Dame Ticket Office. There are 2,500 student tickets available in the lottery, the results of which will be announced Monday.

“However, their win rate can be no higher than that of the Notre Dame student lottery. Any excess Saint Mary’s tickets would go to the Notre Dame lottery,” the statement reported.

Senior Autumn Nelson said she hopes the student bodies can remove any sense of entitlement from the lottery drawings and just provide the football team with the support and excitement of a home game.

“I feel like the things that Saint Mary's has contributed and will continue to contribute have played an integral role in the community that is Notre Dame,” Nelson said. “It's about supporting a team and supporting each other in this time of overwhelming joy and victory. I hope whoever gets a ticket will cheer just as loud as me, if not louder.”

For senior Meghan Casey, the chance to go to the national championship game and cheer for her team alongside Notre Dame students is just one of the experiences both Saint Mary’s and Notre Dame have shared for years.

“I hope that we can look past the differences in the schools and notice that we are all part of the Notre Dame community and camaraderie between the students is what really matters in this situation,” Casey said. “Saint Mary’s and Notre Dame have great traditions that stem from the 1800s and the unity between the schools is what is so beautiful about this place.”

Like Casey, senior Caroline Gallagher has a great love for the traditions between Saint Mary’s and Notre Dame that have been present in her life since she was a little girl.

“I cannot remember a time that I didn't cheer for the Notre Dame football team,” she said. “My grandfather so proudly passed on his love, for not only Notre Dame football, but for the University as a whole. Although I may not be as fortunate as others in being chosen for the student lottery, I'm going to be cheering on my football team as I celebrate my last Notre Dame game as a student, regardless of whether I am sitting in the student section of the Sun Life Stadium or sitting in a Miami Gardens bar.”

Until the notifications arrive Monday, students at both schools can only wait and hope that they are one of the lucky ones who will receive a ticket from the lottery.

“Notre Dame is ranked No. 1 in the nation and playing in the national championship,” Sullivan said. “I know what I'll be watching on Jan. 7.”

For Gallagher, she said times like this football season make her extremely grateful for both Saint Mary’s and Notre Dame.

“In continuing the traditions and relationship alive between two wonderful institutions, I am extremely proud to be a part of the Saint Mary’s and Notre Dame family,” Gallagher said.

And the claim that the anonymous donor's wife is a SMC alumna is also a crock, because guess what - the Donor is ANONYMOUS. For all we know that donor could be an alumna of Notre Dame, and thus she would have no SMC wife. Well, most likely wouldn't. lol

The anonymous donor donated to help the students afford the tickets. The donor did not specify that St Mary's students get a portion of the tickets. Just because the SMC alums keep posting and repeating that does not make it true.

Tyler, SMC is just expressing their thanks for their allegiance with ND, not complaining about anything. Sounds like someone didn't get a student ticket.

Uhhh there's a huge difference between saying someone deserves a ticket and they deserve a Notre Dame student ticket. Bottom line. Plenty of deserving fans have to buy one online, and it's not a knock on them one bit -- they just don't attend the University. SMC students don't have to take this as a slight, but are choosing to do so. If you go to St. Mary's it is not the same as going to Notre Dame -- it's just a fact.

"And I am beyond thrilled to know that the donor's wife was a SMC Alumna and it was her idea to donate through her husband to the University of Notre Dame."

Can you show something with proof of this? The donor is anonymous and yet people keep saying this and I'm wondering where they got it from.

And I am beyond thrilled to know that the donor's wife was a SMC Alumna and it was her idea to donate through her husband to the University of Notre Dame. I come from a family rooted with Belles and Domers and there is not one person who should feel as if they deserve a ticket over someone else. It is a privilege that we can even say that our football team is #1. Well said SMC, and may the odds be ever in ALL of our favors!

Way to take all this in stride SMC!

To the person who wrote this comment:

If the Saint Mary's students are so grateful for their relationship with Notre Dame, why not give the tickets back? As a sign of gratitude? Or are the students too elitist to give the tickets the students of the school that the football team actually belongs to?

...Seriously? It's going to be okay. Time to move on!

To the person who wrote this comment:

First comment: why in the world do you assume all the negative comments are from "Notre Dame women"? There are guys just as upset about this. By your reasoning that we are all "one faith tradition", then shouldn't all 1 billion Catholics in the world be included in this ticket lottery? Since we've already eliminated the first criteria of being a student at Notre Dame.

Sad...I think you just helped SMC prove their point...again

To the Anonymous below me: Why did the UNIVERSITY OF NOTRE DAME decide to let SMC students in the lottery? Hmm? They could have easily not allowed it to happen. Don't blame it on the SMC students who are merely taking advantage of the opportunity that the UNIVERSITY of NOTRE DAME has given them.

Also, when Facebook was first started Saint Mary's wasn't a recognized school to enter. You had to use Notre Dame. I eventually changed mine to Saint Mary's, but I'd imagine that's not true of everyone. Let's not assume it's some attempt to "pretend" we went to Notre Dame. That's just a silly comment.

If you go to her profile, it clearly says "Studies at Saint Mary's College." The poster below me is correct, facebook is just being stupid....again...

To answer anonymous below: many SMC students take classes at ND or are part of the band/ROTC which require ND e-mail addresses to register. Facebook allows you to add two schools at once for college, so I would imagine that those women wanted to add both. If you add Notre Dame after you've already added SMC...it shows up as the first and will be the school that is displayed on facebook. It's not their fault. Ask facebook why it does it that way. Why not add both schools to your facebook page? WHO CARES?

Why do some SMC responders so "proud" of their alma mater list "University of Notre Dame" and not "St. Mary's College" as their affiliated college on their Facebook profiles, as if they currently go to or graduated from ND? Look at the 1st commenter on this article and the many ones on main article -- you'd think they are ND, not SMC, students from their Facebook profiles (that they created). Not all do, but enough to notice... and enough to be embarrassed for them.

As a SMC alumna, I am proud to see that our current students continue to respond maturely and graciously to the tactless remarks often made by Notre Damn women. We are, after all, one faith tradition. Well done. Go Irish!
Thankful for the generosity of the anonymous donor

So proud of this response from Saint Mary's women! It just shows how respectful and gracious you all are!!

Apparently, all the culture and class is across the street from ND!!

Thank you "anonymous donor" for including Saint Mary's and acknowledging their part in the Notre Dame community!

Great response to that crap yesterday. Way to show pride and not rebuttal with an offensive attack. How classy.
