  • Gans: Storylines abound in NHL Playoffs (April 30)

After a shortened season due to the lockout that made each regular-season game hold even more importance than in normal years, the NHL playoffs begin tonight to make for two of the most exciting months in sports. With the playoffs now upon us, here are five storylines to keep an eye on:

  • Monaco: Instant analysis is merely entertainment (April 29)

Sure, it’s entertaining to grade a team’s draft performance much the same way it’s entertaining to conduct a mock draft three weeks or months before the actual draft. But that’s precisely what such instant “analysis” is: entertainment.

  • Gastelum: Maddon teaches new leadership (April 26)

I’ve always had a soft spot for the dude who just likes to have fun and shoot the you-know-what without a worry.

So naturally, Tampa Bay Rays manager Joe Maddon is one of my favorite coaches of all-time.

  • Hartnett: NBA teams need to branch out (April 25)

Still, Brown’s re-hiring in Cleveland illustrates an important point: The NBA coaching ranks are more insular than a third-generation family business.

Of the 30 NBA coaches who finished out the current NBA regular season (even those who have since been fired), 17 previously served as head coach of another NBA team.

  • Lorton: Nothing beats a 'mock' draft (April 24)

Draft week is my favorite week of the year.

It is like Christmas morning for me when Roger Goodell stands up on that podium and announces the draft picks.

Kelly's first year marked by highs and lows
