Bring back Brown

Letter to the Editor

I will preface this with the acknowledgement that the Irish secondary has grossly underperformed on the field this year compared to pre-season “on-paper” expectations. The reason could be anything from coaching to players being over-rated. Nonetheless, my biggest disappointment this year has been the “disappearance” of Corwin Brown.

This comment definitely comes on the heels of the Nov. 12 articles reporting Brown’s comments about Navy. No matter how one may perceive those comments, since he arrived at Notre Dame in 2007, Coach Brown has displayed an unmatchable enthusiasm for the game and the University. Moreover, he has earned a reputation as a good recruiter and a coach the players respect. For these reasons, no matter what occurs with Charlie Weis, I would like to see Corwin Brown back on the Notre Dame sideline next season.

During Coach Brown’s first season with the Irish, I enjoyed his chest-bumping and camaraderie with the players despite a 3-9 performance. His appearance and reactions on the sideline let me know that someone on the staff “got it.” And while I did not question the move of Jon Tenuta to defensive coordinate at season’s start (the guy coached top-25 defenses at Georgia Tech and many referenced him as a coach Notre Dame should aspire to have during the 2007 season), I thought Corwin Brown’s young defenses had progressed.

At season’s start, my dream scenario involved Coach Weis in the coaches’ box upstairs calling plays and Coach Brown on the sideline communicating with players. Word out of the Dome after the bowl game last December was that administration officials were impressed by Brown’s pregame and halftime speeches to the players during the Hawaii Bowl. And that turned out pretty well, I believe. Unfortunately, conventionality won out, and here we sit at a very mediocre 6-4.

Much as history tells us that Bob Davie should have promoted Urban Meyer from receivers’ coach to offensive coordinator in 1999 (most of us agreed with Kevin Rogers’ hire at the time), I believe time will show that Charlie Weis should have moved to the coaches’ box and given Corwin Brown the sidelines for the 2009 season.

So no matter how this season ends, my biggest disappointment, besides the record of course, will be the “disappearance” of Corwin Brown. Because, as I said, the man gets “it.”

Notre Dame should really consider Lue Holtz's son Skip Holtz at East Carolina University. Skip Holtz has had a winning program for the last several years. East Carolina is in bowl position this year.

I think the entire defense has grossly underachieved however the D-line has killed the unit. Time and time again the blitzing linebacker and or safety has been picked up which leaves one on one blocking with the defensive linemen. Where is their pressure? I know they are young, but they are just not winning any one on one match ups. So a blitz comes, gets picked up, the quarterback goes through his progressions and orders lunch and then hits the open receiver. Blitzing is supposed to at least rush the quarterback's decision making and the Irish have failed to do that. You cannot blitz 60-70% of the time, not have any sacks or pressure, and then blame the secondary for the other team passing success.

Tom, maybe Corwin's players would perform better if they were doing what he brought them there to do....sound tackling, don't over pursue, play with passion. Don't know if you tuned into some more of the elite programs in the country but there's alot of defenses that fly onto the field, make a big plays and fly off being congratulated and encouraged by their coaches. Kind of hard for Tenuta to get those results when he is just given Brown's job, brings the house, gets burned, and is a quarter mile away in the box.

I'm trying hard to find the link. Bill Cowher has publicly shown interest in the head coaching job at Notre Dame.

Why should 'we give Corwin a shot"- that is stupid. His players have underperformed the whole time he has been here. He might be a good recruiter - but he has not proven he can get his players to a high level of performance.

The elephant in the room is the dump that South Bend has become. There is one quality restaurant in the whole metro area. Austin or South Bend?

Although I think there are problems with the coaching staff I wonder why no one is critical of the adminstrations refusal to institute a red-shirt program, a training table, accept juco transfers, have atheletic dorms, join a conference and gain their own officals and a multitude off adminstrative changes that would benefit the football program. It's not just the coaches.

Dan,

How about you start a football team, and Corwin can be your defensive coordinator.........ND deserves better, and they should get busy finding one before everybody looses interest in the program (including recruites),
Maybe with all the chest bumping, Corwin could become a member of the cheerleading staff!!

I agree with the article, but more importantly ND must join the Big East. They are making same mistake with football that they made with basketball a few decades ago. Arrogance is blinding the admins from the realization that the landscape has changed and being in the Big East would solidify future schedules (keep USC, Navy, Purdue and add Army as non-conference) and offer us protection from official booth reviews that always favor the team with the best chance of making the BCS.

Although I read almost everything ND that comes across the internet, I have never posted a comment anywhere (ND-related or non ND-related). However, after reading this, I just want to add a comment supporting Dan's post. I have been wondering this all year and heard the same about his player interaction in the bowl game last December. I admire Tenuta's resume, but just don't understand how Coach Brown got lost in the mix over the last 2 years. In all of the recent talk of Gruden or Meyer or Kelly to ND, I've quite often wondered...let's give Corwin a shot. Great post, Dan and thanks for bringing that into the light. Go Irish, hang in there fellow fans.

I definitely think Corwin should return!! Think about it, the defense was so much further along than the offense after last season. I personality think Corwin gets more out of these kids than Taunta. On paper Corwin’s the DB coach but don’t hold him responsible, it’s still Taunta playground defense. The bull crap title (asst head coach) was just a cover-up for Charlie to put his boy on. Don’t be surprised if Corwin is the next young hot coach we let get-away.

the o-line take bad penalties at crucial times in every game, for all the expirience they have its unacceptable. and how can the d-line get beat by navy when all they do is run, does navy even have a QB?

With all tbese comments about Brown, what about Tenuta. His blitzes over run plays, wrong times, etc. What is he accountable for? It makes me sad to see how we can't handle runs to either side and then the middle. God it's sad.
And what about all the shoulder tackling. Wrap a guy up and hold him. Last thought---out tackles stink. Young should be a lot better as a senior and Duncan couldn't stop a high school junior. The whole thing is just sad.

Isn't Corwin Brown in charge of the DB's???? A group that is all upperclassmen and somehow gets worked week in and week out...This is what I see. Other teams drop eight in coverage and still get decent pressure and Clausen makes good throws to beat the coverage. ND rushes four or five, two or three guys do nothing and two corners and two safeties get left on islands to where they play like they have been left on an island....with little pressure and their quarterback makes throws to open guys. The funny thing is these other teams sometimes still don't convert and it because they aren't that good. Notre Dame is so much better than these teams I don't know how they don't win???? Go Irish.

Corwin Brown will be a head coach someday, somewhere...it just isn't going to be at ND right now, he's not ready for that and he needs to get with a seasoned head coach somewhere he can be valued. Everyone must go from the defense regardless of what role they played, that's just the state of the team currently.

Corwin Brown does bring energy to the program, chest bumping does not mean he is a good coach. Actually, as you stated his position (DB) failed big time. If a new coach comes in, I would guess Defense will be a priority and Corwin's body of work won't add up. He is a good recruiter and may be retained in that capacity. I like him as well, but the whole staff will be replaced. No comment on Weis in the booth, pipe dream, Hawii Bowl results worked for me though. Good Article.

I respect your opinion, BUT, I think we should gut the entire program. the defense is a complete failure, get rid of everyone involved.
