Celebrate seniors

Letter to the Editor

The senior class is on the brink of an achievement that has never been accomplished. Assuming (and this is a big assumption) that the football team beats Tulsa this weekend, the game against Utah will be our chance to break the record of most losses in a four-year period, previously owned by the Class of 1964. When we get steamrolled by Utah on Nov. 13, we will officially be the losingest class in Notre Dame History. That day will also be Senior Day, a day that the senior class is allowed on the field at the end of the game. The senior class should not walk onto the field, but storm the field in celebration of its four seasons as spectators in the student section. The senior class should show its thanks and appreciation for a record-breaking four seasons by storming the field at the closing of the loss to Utah on Nov. 13.

Having graduated from ND some twenty years ago I would say not only the Football team has grown soft but the graduates coming out as well have a "softness" and entitlement attitude as well that seriously gives me second thoughts of hiring someone from ND.

As for "Catholic", ND is more secular than Catholic. There are several smaller lesser known Catholic schools that uphold the Catholic values than ND.

As for someone who rather have a degree from Michigan, Ann Arbor is a cess pool of arrogance like no other........

ND is an elitist university that is still living in the 1960s. They fear change more than John McCain did in 2008. Ok I def just said that to sound witty, either way until they bring in someone that knows how to win AND is allowed to implement their program we will have run-on sentences and ND continuing to suck. I'm from the ND pipeline and Im Irish Catholic. Of course I want those bast@rds to do well, stop firing black coaches after 3/5 seasons. ND is an amazing school, but they think they still have an amazing football team that can stand on its own. Join a conference you Jamoaks! Jabronis! Jaggaloons!

I agree with a previous poster. ND has become the Disneyland of the Midwest. No toughness and no edge. Just a big tourist attraction that wants to sell overpriced T-shirts with witty statements on them.

Try and stand up at a football game and there's a 50% chance some old people are going to get the ushers to make you sit down.

I don't know what has happened to the ND we all grew up loving, but it no longer exists. It's too bad the current students don't have an understanding of what ND use to be.

Stand up

A little misguided, but a good statement. The football players haven't given a crap for a long time. Maybe if the school decided they wanted to be a serious program again and hire a real coach instead of someone who will just follow their little rules and do what they want we could be good again.
I was at ND during the Davie years and the students were wusses about it back then and would even scream at other students in the stands if they complained about the stupid coaching. I think it is a Catholic thing. Just follow whatever you are told or else you are out of line. Reslife is the best example of this. I came from a public high school and was shocked at how juvenile the school treated it's students. It was more strict that my high school in many ways. Oh well, the good days are long gone, ND has become soft.

Guys, you attend a university with an incredible reputation in all things not just football. Ok, you're not the 4 Horsemen currently, but 100% of all other football teams would give all they have, even being 0-12 for this and the next 3 seasons to have a tenth of your history and tradition.

And yes, Utah would love to be as big time in the future as you are now. It is a great disappoint to me that my current economic condition prevents me from accompanying my team to see the shrine of college football that is Notre Dame. I hope that being in the PAC-12 from next year on will not prevent Utah from returning as some time in the future.

Enjoy what you have and accept my best wishes for your play after the 13th and kick BYU as hard as you can in the future.

Matthew,

If you are a senior at The University of Notre Dame, and you think with such flaccid reasoning and communicate with such adolescent smarm, than it would appear that the list of people who have failed you
is extensive. The football team is close to the bottom of that list. There is nothing they could in four years to embarass you more effectively than you've done with such convincing brevity. Do better.

This has nothing to do with being on or off the ND bandwagon, its not about recruiting or admissions standards or any of that. This is about a senior class that has watched their team play for four years with no heart, no soul, no attitude, no emotion, and no will to win. ND may never be a national power again but there is no reason we can't play hard, and go fight for every yard and every tackle on every down. That's what Navy has done for the past 4 years vs ND and its worked out pretty well. ND football needs desire and toughness before anything will get better.

Celebrating breaking that record by running out on the field is a bad idea. Why not do what we did when we set the record. Go to the Linebacker and down a few cool ones!

The '64 class had a winning percentage of .308, and NEVER saw a winning season (2-8, 5-5, 5-5, 2-7). The '10 class might indeed see more losses (29 if we lose out), but the worst their winning percentage could be is .408 (plus they saw a 7-6 season). On top of which I'm guessing no one in the '64 class felt the need to write a smarmy letter to the Observer about their "dire" straights.

I'm a Utah fan, and my wife bought me tickets to the game. I'm so pumped to go to Indiana to one of the greatest venues in sports. Notre Dame fans have a great reputation for being the best hosts in the country. I can't wait for the experience, and am looking forward to a great game.

Hopefully you guys will win out (after Utah of course). I'm hoping to storm the field with you all. And of course I will be rooting for you to stomp the zoobies (BYU) next year.

I agree with this post a hundred percent. I hope the seniors do it. It would be great to see a senior class that has more fight than the football team.

Nice article by someone who has never played football in his life. Probably the same 140 pound kid that was bitching, thinking he knows what he's talking about, as I left the Pitt game.

Obnoxious student, embarrassing idea. I hope that kid is the only dumb*ss to rush the field after a home loss and he is promptly removed by police. What a jerk.

The problem may be that if you are the loser that you claim to be you will probably screw this up too, and the team will win those last two home games and you will be what you claim to be - a loser.

"Do you honestly think that it would be a wise choice for a kid with a bunch of options to go to ND. Hell, the degree isn't even that impressive. I'd rather have a BA from Stanford, Cal, Virginia, Michigan or Vandy. At least there you'd be in a nice town attending a fun college."

As a person who did attend UVA for grad school, I can tell you that in fact, the degree is that impressive. The ND degree opens doors that the UVA one never will. Especially since I may not live in VA for the rest of my life. While I'll admit that perhaps a degree from Stanford would probably open the same doors, the rest is just bull. Just because you'd rather the ND degree didn't mean something, doesn't make it so.

I think the Ivy League would be out for football, since they choose not to compete for a National Championship...although, now that I think of it, the Ivy League would be perfect.

Its not the academics that is the problem. Michigan, Stanford and Cal are all much better at football than ND. The problem is that you guys have been bad for so long that no kids want to play for ND anymore. Back in the day kids would go to ND because of tradition and the fact that you would be playing for a national championship each year. Kids watch ND play some great games while they were growing up and wanted to be part of it. They overlooked the fact that ND is in a crappy town, has bad weather and is no where near as fun as a big ten or SEC school.

Do you honestly think that it would be a wise choice for a kid with a bunch of options to go to ND. Hell, the degree isn't even that impressive. I'd rather have a BA from Stanford, Cal, Virginia, Michigan or Vandy. At least there you'd be in a nice town attending a fun college.

ND is a has been and will take a lot to get back on track. How many kids growing up right now have been dreaming of playing for ND. The number gets smaller and smaller each year. Your best bet is to join the Beg Ten and get kids that were passed over by OSU, PSU, Michigan and Wisconsin and want to play them each year.

I think the real embarrassment is grammar used by "non-fighting-serious-irish-alum ". Quite the private education.
