Responsibility lies with Father Jenkins

Let’s go back five years to see how we got to where we are now.

1. Newly-elected Fr. John Jenkins acts in December 2004 to fire Tyrone Willingham prior to his formal installment as President in the spring.

2. Kevin White, his athletic director then, publicly states that he had no part in this decision — in fact, he did not agree with it — yet is retained to embark on a program of watering down Notre Dame’s schedule for the near-eternity by employing the Ohio State model of 7-5 (later to be perfected to 7-4-1) with the inclusion of increasingly-crappier teams over time. (And after the 10 year deal-in-the-making with Rutgers fell through, Mr. White then agreed to a five year contract with upstart Connecticut — and we all know how that turned out.)

3. Obviously, with White not being on board with the firing, no real homework regarding a replacement had been done other than living on a prayer that Urban Meyer would obviously want to come to his “dream school” and work for the group that for over a decade just couldn’t seem to shoot straight.

4. After nearly-constant abuse on various Notre Dame Football-related blogs, said former athletic director leaves of his own volition to pursue employment opportunities at a school with which we hoped to “aspirationally peer.” That he was never outright fired at the time of the Willingham dismissal or essentially told to hit the road a short time later is especially telling.

5. And this special telling is that Fr. Jenkins — and not Jack Swarbrick — is essentially calling all the important shots on the football program at Notre Dame. Now why would I say this? Well, think about it. When Jack Swarbrick, a lawyer with zero experience in running a college athletic program of any kind — not even considering football at any level — is hired to be the new yes-man in town, he promptly proclaims that he and Fr. Jenkins have a “shared vision.”

6. So what then does Mr. Swarbrick proceed to do upon his hiring? He promptly proclaims upon meeting with Charlie Weis in the summer of 2008 that both he and the coach have the same “shared vision” too. So now what you have is not just two but the top three people responsible for the football program at Notre Dame all running around sharing the same flawed vision for the long-ago-storied Notre Dame Football program.

7. So then you start the 2008 season thinking you’re on Easy Street, but when cracks start to show up in the offense, it becomes painfully obvious that the book on beating Notre Dame is to rush only four, double on Tate and Floyd, and wait for us to absolutely not exploit such a defense obviously stacked against the pass by trying to develop some semblance of a running game.

8. And then you finish the season out with an embarrassing loss to lowly Syracuse and the customary blowout loss to USC. But instead of firing the guy with so many flaws at being head coach of a major college football program, both Swarbrick and Jenkins let said coach B.S. his way into keeping his job by throwing out some nonsense about saving the recruiting class, having an experienced Jimmy back, and being in the “BCS conversation” with an overall experienced roster returning next year also.

9. Then, come this year, the new AD with the apparent good father’s blessing, proceeds to further tarnish the Notre Dame Football mystique by adding powerhouse programs such as Utah, Tulsa, and Western Michigan to our illustrious home schedule so as to clear the field for our obviously-overmatched coach next year as a follow-up to inking multi-year deals with Army at really cool, off-site venues at the same time. Then the season that was never-meant-to-be turns out to be the same-as-it-ever-was as our head coach outright refuses to commit to the run with opposing teams continuing to stop our decided schematic advantage dead in its tracks with the same rush-four, double-on-the-outside-receivers, and wait-for-us-to-blow-up-on-offense defense.

10. Now the new yes-man in town is going around making inane statements that his evaluation matrix for Coach Weis — which includes a lot more data points than mere wins and losses — doesn’t begin until after this week’s impending debacle. So give me a break. Fr. Jenkins got exactly what he wanted when he hired Jack Swarbrick, no more and no less, so it’s going to have to be up to the good father himself to make the right decision for the first time in nearly 15 years regarding the football program at Notre Dame. And I’m not sure he’s up to it given his track record over the last five years. And if he isn’t, he should step aside and let someone with some basic knowledge of college football step in and do so.

11. So if you truly care about the Notre Dame Football program and its importance in the lives of so many people — as well as the prestige that college football success at Notre Dame affords the University — please, please, Fr. Jenkins, do the right thing here and do it sooner than later, real soon to be precise. Otherwise, it may be forever too late.

What are you talking about in #2--'The Ohio State Model" . Don't you remember that Earle Bruce was fired for going 8-3 year after year. His nickname was "Old 8 and 3 Earle". You've got the wrong school, Bub. Which leads me to believe that the rest of your points are not valid.

As a OSU alum and a lifelong ND fan, your post is not worthy.

What are you talking about, "the Ohio State Model"? Earl Bruce was fired for going 8-3---"old 8-3 Earle" was his nickname. Ask a Buckeye alum and lifelong ND fan, I beg to differ with your point #2 which leads me to believe that all you other points are invalid.

Notre Dame is imploding, and fast. It is no longer recognized as an authentic catholic university, it's board reappoints a controversial president, it's academics don't really generate any leading-edge technical research and its last semblance of greatness - its football team, can't win a game.

Why does everyone want Lou back? I think he is overrated in ND history. He lowered academic standards and gave gifts to recruits. Plus you can't hear a word he says; he's either mumbling or slurring his words.

Dear ND'92 and Joe'95 - would that be the Lou Holtz who said this back in August 2009:
"I personally believe, if you ask me, 'Who's going to play in the national championship game?' I'd say it's going to be Florida and the University of Notre Dame," Holtz says. "They return 11 starters on offense. They return all three running backs, the two best wide receivers, they have a great defense coming back."
GREAT DEFENSE! You can't make this up!

"I think they should keep Weis for one more yr. If not they will lose Clausan & tate and who knows who else wil leave. If Weis goes they will start from sratch next yr and will have a losing season , guarentee. I was at Notre dame for the first time several weks ago for the navey game. i have been a fan for yrs and what a n experience being in South bend. I say give Charlie on mor yr with this group of kids. With next yrs schedule they could easily go 10-1"

-Remember that we were suppose to go 11-1 THIS season, 3-9 should've been the precursor for the inevitable.

There is soooo much more to ND than its football program. I can't believe Watchtower that you wouldn't encourage your kids to attend. My father and grandfather graduated from ND and walking that campus you can't help having the feeling of something very special. Don't worry Watchtower, maybe your kids don't meet the academic requirements of such an institution, but the number of students who apply every year is staggering. Obviously they apply for a reason, odds are it isn't based on the football schedule, its players or coach.

That being said, ND is slowly loosing it's football identity. As much as I'd like a coach who has all the qualities of Lou, Ara or Knute, odds are, it won't happen. Some of the prior coaches hired (Faust, Davie, Willingham, Weis) have been absolutely horrible. This current team has a lot of talent. As fans we see it, but despite that fact, the coaches can not tweak, harvest or get this team to perform at their fullest potential. The potential is there! I think Weis can recruit he just can't coach! The thought that Meyer, Saban or Stoops taking over such a program is wishful thinking. Then again Urban Meyer never should have said his 'dream job' was to coach at ND. Had he never said that no one would ever of brought his name up. But bringing ND back to their glory days on the grid iron won't come from any popular name coaches because there is nothing to offer them. The person who brings ND football back to life will be the person/coach who KNOWS ND football. Someone who knows the legacy, knows how special ND truly is, knows what makes ND tick, and someone who can relay that to recruits, until then this program will continue downhill. But I do have faith, that one day, maybe soon, that person will step forward and ND football will rise to glory once again.

Catholics are dwindling, and even those still Catholic (like Urban Legend) don't want to come to the snow belt and work for a priest. What kind of boy becomes a priest? We sure have found out a lot about that over the years. ND football is 20th Century, just as Yale Football was 19th century. Join the Big East, dump Pat Haden and NBC and just realize the landscape has changed and warmer climate teams are going to continue to dominate outdoor sports this century. This is not Charlie's fault, who do you think is out there that is better that will want to come to a place I spent 4 years at, and would never talk my kids into going to? Shame on all those who have been just plain mean to the Weis family.

Rev jenkincsc is incopetent-consecrated as a priest-yet a total fool-Imagine having a Catholic priest like jenkins as CE o of a major bank or insurance company-jenkins hired Weis with no college experience as a coach- never played the game and was one of many assistants - then when charlie was out coached by pete carroll in the last minutes Jenkins extends his contract then allows the joe Pesci to run his filthy mouth with MF and Cs in the stadium on 60 Minutes -smiling like he did with the V -----a Dialogues then would not fire this fat baffon before or after the second gut malpractice trial

where is the accountantability - I wrote Jenkins last year and told him to reisn and go to Moreau high school in east Oakland ca a Holy Cross high school or Afganistan as a chaplain- Jenkins should resign allowthe decision to be made by all former ND players for thew jast 30 years and Lou and Ara in an open session at the joyce Ac- why Not? sue Weis for fraud- incompetence not one GD dime in severance
make the Weis contract and extension public and we will all send Father John to Rome or Kabul right after Harbugh and Stanford does a 56 to 10 exit Fire Jenkins Swarbrick and sue Weis monday

Michael,
Typical ND alum living in the all too distant past. Wake up ND has not been a powerhouse in over a decade.
check your facts on Utah football. Utes finished #4 in the country in 2004 and #2 in the country in 2008. Utah has been ranked ahead of ND in 2009. Look for Utah to beat ND in 2010.

Isn't Jenkins the brilliant one who invited Obama to talk to the graduates of 09, and to whom he awarded a degree from Notre Dame. And, somehow you expect another "good" decision from him. You got to be dreaming!

The delusions of ND getting a coach like Meyer, Saban or Stoops need to stop. These coaches are in great situations with winning teams and recruiting "auto-pilot". What does ND offer these guys to leave? Besides cold weather and tougher academic standards, not much. We need a young, driven coach with something still to prove who can breathe life into this program. Chris Peterson, Gary Patterson and Brian kelly should be the top 3 candidates.
