Observer news writer reflects on her experience in and evacuation from Egypt

For almost exactly a year, I prepared to spend a semester abroad in Cairo.

I had studied Arabic language and Egyptian culture.

I bought appropriate clothes that would cover my body.

I felt prepared.

What I wasn't prepared for was to be in the midst of a revolution and regime change in my first week there.

After only 12 days, I was evacuated from Egypt and spent the remainder of the semester studying in London. But the experience is one I wouldn't trade for the world.

Here are my reflections on what it was like in Cairo during the uprisings, what it was like to be isolated from the rest of the world when the Internet was shut down, what tear gas feels like and how it feels to be an evacuee.
