Saint Mary's SGA releases statement, denounce hatred within campus community

In an email to students Tuesday afternoon, the Saint Mary’s Student Government Association (SGA) addressed students with regards to the existence of racial injustice within the nation and how racial hatred has no place within the College. The statement was written by and with the support of the student body president, vice president and presidents of the Student Diversity Board, Student Activities Board, Class Council and Residence Hall Association.

“We are aware that although this is one tragedy, it is not an isolated incident for our communities and country at large," the email said.

The statement acknowledged the racial injustices evident across the country and stated that racism will not be tolerated at the College.

“All Belles who walk down the Avenue deserve the utmost dignity and respect, and anything short of that is a failure on our part,” the email said.

In adherence to the mission statement of the College, which includes points on inclusivity, community and “the response to the complex needs and challenges of contemporary life,” SGA said they “support anyone, especially within our Belle community, who chooses to stand up and speak out for what is right and just in the name of those members of society who have been denied basic human rights time and time again.”

SGA also expressed their support for students peacefully protesting, signing petitions, self-educating, opening dialogue, contacting policymakers and beyond in order to make the world a better place,” despite physical distance.
