Kelly's first year marked by highs and lows

In a tumultuous 2010 season that featured extreme highs, like a signature victory over archrival USC, and extreme lows, including two of the program's worst losses in history, the Irish underwent a transition led by first-year coach Brian Kelly few could have imagined.

Individually, each of them hails from a different state, plays a different position on the field and dominated the competition in high school, but together the five early enrollees are already making an impact during their first month of organized football at Notre Dame.

ND Softball: Mercy rule seals victory

The Irish meant it when they said that they weren't satisfied with their play Tuesday night, even though they finished their game against Loyola-Chicago 8-0. Stopped by mercy rule in six innings, the No. 24 Irish (29-7) extended their winning streak to 12 games.

Men's Basketball: Scott to test NBA draft prospects

Irish senior forward Carleton Scott announced his declaration for the NBA Draft Wednesday night after the 2011 men's basketball awards' banquet. Scott has one year of eligibility remaining, and did not sign a contract with an agent, so he can remove himself from the draft after pre-draft workouts and return for his final season of eligibility. If Scott is to return to the Irish, he must declare such before May 8.

Recruiting: Over 40 recruits to visit campus

Having already extended more than 100 scholarship offers, Irish coach Brian Kelly will expect more than 40 recruits of the class of 2012 in town this weekend, Irish recruiting analyst Mike Frank said.

Junior attack Sean Rogers is a busy man, and it's all thanks to his tight-knit network of teammates and friends. They drive him to excel academically, athletically and socially — and he has done so, leading the Irish to an 8-0 record.

SMC Softball:SMC stays above .500 with win

The Belles maintained a winning record with their much-needed 11-0 win against Franklin Tuesday, but only after dropping the first game of the afternoon's doubleheader by a score of 9-4.

Men's Golf: Notre Dame takes first in home tournament

With the sour taste of two disappointing tournament finishes lingering, the Irish returned to familiar grounds for Tuesday's Battle at the Warren on the Warren Golf Course. Notre Dame played well on its home course, finishing in first place by 11 strokes.

ND Softball: Doubleheader leads to Notre Dame sweep

Despite what some team members called "mediocre play" during Tuesday's doubleheader, the No. 24 Irish managed to soundly defeat Bowling Green 10-2 and 8-5. These two wins contributed to the 11-game winning streak the Irish (28-7) have maintained since their home opener.

Hockey: Big (Ten) change

The lights have dimmed and the curtain has closed on the 2010-11 Irish hockey season. It was a successful one, as Notre Dame advanced to the Frozen Four for just the second time in program history. With twelve rising sophomores expected to return, a brand new arena opening for the 2011-2012 season and just four seniors departing, much talk has already moved to next year and the seasons to come.

Baseball: Aoki changes team culture

Amid free agency, steroids allegations and commercial breaks between pitching changes, often times the business of winning takes a backseat for a professional baseball manager. While first-year Irish coach Mik Aoki deals with a different set of distractions as a collegiate coach, a professional attitude and a new focus instilled by Notre Dame's skipper has the program headed back in a winning direction.

SMC Tennis: Saint Mary's travels to Alma for road tilt

The Belles face crunch time as they travel to Alma tonight to compete in the first of four final conference matches before the MIAA championships. Standing at .500 in conference play, Saint Mary's hopes to end the season on a strong note.
