The Observer General Board elected sports editor Mike Gilloon as the 2006-07 editor in chief on Saturday.
Gilloon, a junior English major from Omaha, Neb. who lives in Stanford Hall, joined The Observer as a sports reporter during his freshman year. Since then, he has covered a wide variety of beats, including Notre Dame football, football recruiting, volleyball and men's lacrosse.
"I look forward to the opportunity to use the experience I've gained with the sports department to improve the paper as a whole," Gilloon said. "It is a challenge, but one I am honored to accept."
During Gilloon's term as sports editor, he coordinated special sections on each Notre Dame football game and various other Notre Dame and interhall teams.
He is the third editor in chief in the past four years to come from the sports department.
"I have confidence in Mike's ability to lead The Observer next year," outgoing editor in chief Claire Heininger said. "He has a wealth of great ideas and an excellent relationship with the staff."
Gilloon hopes to undertake projects during his tenure that include improving writing throughout The Observer, upgrading technology and streamlining the process by which the paper is produced.
"I am excited to see what I can do to see The Observer improve next year," Gilloon said. "And I'm extremely eager to work with a very talented staff."
Gilloon will assume the position as editor in chief on March 6.
