Mike Elko to leave Notre Dame for Texas A&M

Irish head coach Brian Kelly announced in a tweet Thursday that Notre Dame defensive coordinator Mike Elko would be leaving the position to take the same post at Texas A&M.

Elko was one of the seven new coaches the program brought in during the 2016-17 offseason, after Notre Dame’s 4-8 season and played an integral role in the program’s turnaround. His turnover minded defense intercepted 10 balls and forced eight fumbles. The squad also tallied 24 sacks. Before coming to Notre Dame, Elko had most recently worked as defensive coordinator at Wake Forest for two seasons.

“Notre Dame simply attracts people at the top of their profession, and, with a young and talented football team football team coming back in 2018, we’ll certainly add our next great defensive coordinator in very short order,” Kelly said in his statement.

At Texas A&M, Elko will be working under new head coach Jimbo Fisher, who will begin his first season with the Aggies this year.
