In a Monday press release, the University announced out of 11,836 pre-matriculation COVID-19 tests processed through LabCorp, 99.7% came back with a negative result. Thirty-three students tested positive and cannot arrive on campus until cleared by medical professionals.
In the release, University President Fr. John Jenkins commended the timely matter in which students, faculty and LabCorp completed their assigned task in order for campus to reopen.
“We wanted to make certain our students’ return did not represent a health threat to the South Bend community,” Jenkins said.
The University also analyzed hotspots that students were traveling from to see if some students needed to require more testing once they arrived on campus.
“As we begin the academic year, we will continue to make data-based decisions using the latest information in partnership with our local public health officials and in consultation with outside medical experts,” Marie Lynn Miranda, the Charles and Jill Fischer provost of the University, said.
To continue to promote safety and health precautions, the release said the University has given out 100,000 cloth masks, 10,000 gallons of hand sanitizer are in stock, 370 light pole banners were hung with health and safety messages and 50 “ambassadors” are on duty to remind people to wear masks and maintain safe distancing.
