According to a press release issued by the South Bend Police Department (SBPD), gunshots were fired at Eddy Street Commons around 1 a.m. on Saturday. Three victims, aged 18, 19 and 30, were wounded; police confirmed Monday all injuries are non-life-threatening.
The initial release stated several hundred people were in the area at the time of the shooting.
Several people were detained during the initial investigation by SBPD, who also later arrested one person on preliminary charges at the scene unrelated to the shooting. The Violent Crimes Unit Detectives are continuing to review evidence and conduct interviews.
Declan Cornish, who was at Eddy Street Commons at the time of the shooting, told WNDU the scene “was like a flood of people coming out of bars and shops, and it was overwhelming seeing all those people just running at you.”
Amber Goddard, general manager at O’Rourke’s Public House, told ABC57 that she is “concerned with things going on in the area lately.”
Since last September, Goddard said increased police presence has helped deter crime. She told ABC57 that SBPD has “made sure they’re enforcing curfew laws, and I think that’s kind of what’s helped curb the late-night activity that’s been disturbing our people just trying to enjoy Eddy Street Commons.”
The Observer reported on two instances of gunfire near Eddy Street Commons last September, and students voiced concerns about the uptick in crime.
