If his 2023 MVP campaign hadn’t already done so, this season has solidified Joel Embiid as one of the greatest scorers in NBA history. He averages over one point per minute, a feat previously only achieved by Wilt Chamberlain, except Embiid does so on nearly half as many possessions. Before tearing his meniscus in February, Embiid scored 43% of his team's points, surpassing Michael Jordan’s 1987 season (42.4%) for the highest percentage ever seen. Since 2019, he’s scoring just under 30 points per game on 62% true shooting, and if he maintained that pace in the postseason, he’d be one of the best playoff scorers of all time.

Sports often serve as a metaphor for life, their many parallels inspiring resilience and grace under pressure. Just as humans must grow and adapt to thrive in an ever-changing society, so must athletes evolve to fit the demands of innovative game plans and schemes. Less than a decade ago, every college and professional football team looked to find the next Calvin Johnson or Julio Jones, a towering physical specimen with a strong frame and explosive leaping ability to make contested catches over defenders. After competing all weekend in the Queen City Tune Up in Rock Hill, South Carolina, with the Notre Dame Ultimate Frisbee Club, junior Bengal Bouts captain Michael Rauch groggily stretches his left arm to silence the 8:30 a.m. alarm emanating from his phone resting on the bedside nightstand. With a deep breath, he channels his focus and motivation to leap out from under the covers and prepare for a full slate of mechanical engineering courses, club meetings and athletics practices.

Following their dominant 26-1 performance last week at the DeCicco Duals, the Fighting Irish fencing squad traveled to Evanston, Illinois on Feb. 3 for the annual Northwestern Duals. Though Notre Dame took a step back from near-perfection, both men’s and women’s teams continued to build positive momentum as they approach the ACC and NCAA Championship matches. Building on their 13-0 run at DeCicco, the men’s team won four of their five matches while the women finished the meet with a respectable 2-3 record.

Sometimes, all a person needs is that one missing piece. For Ryan Gosling in “Blade Runner 2049,” it was confirmation of his natural birth. For Ryan Gosling in “Barbie,” it was reciprocated romantic affection and approval. And if Ryan Gosling ever stars in a basketball flick, it would be perfectly placed pocket passes from James Harden.
