For Notre Dame women’s basketball head coach Niele Ivey, the 2023-2024 season was a testament to the thousands of hours of hard work put into her program. For many fans, the 2023-2024 season was a surprise. Although the Irish returned key starters like senior forward Maddy Westbeld and junior guard Sonia Citron, the rest of the roster was a bit of a question mark. At guard, the Irish were effectively swapping out junior Olivia Miles with freshman Hannah Hidalgo, a talented — but inexperienced — young guard who plays at a significantly different pace than Miles. Of course, the Irish also battled the continuous question of Miles’ potential presence. Would she return? If so, when, and what impact would that have on Hidalgo’s play? Ultimately, that question is still to be answered. Miles sat out the entirety of the year, leaving Hidalgo to lead the way.

Those who know me well know that I have no shortage of “hot takes” — particularly concerning sports. One of my most controversial opinions is that many sports — especially football — are better watched on television rather than live and in-person. My exception to that rule, though, is basketball. I think that the smaller arenas serve as better vehicles for fans to express their excitement, distaste or awe for whatever happens in the game. At the game, fans can feel timeouts called after a scoring run. Fans can feel a game-tying transition layup. And possibly, more than anything else, fans can feel the officiating.

As fans across the country have seen over the past couple of days, anyone can win in March Madness — especially unranked, mid-major teams. The madness that encapsulates March can ruin any team’s success, but maybe not Notre Dame’s — or at least, not just yet.

WASHINGTON — Notre Dame’s 2023-2024 men’s basketball team was unpredictable, often shooting itself in the foot. But in every minute of every game, head coach Micah Shrewsberry made it clear: giving it one’s all wasn’t just encouraged, but required. The team took that message to heart. Unfortunately, it can only get a team so far.

WASHINGTON — Late at night on Ash Wednesday, amidst a sparse Purcell Pavilion, Notre Dame rallied to beat Georgia Tech by 3. Since then, Notre Dame’s men’s basketball team has gone 4-3, a stark improvement from its 1-9 stretch in January and February. It just keeps getting better, though; Tuesday might have been one the team’s most impressive showings yet. Notre Dame narrowly came out on top in an 84-80 game at Capital One Arena, advancing to face Wake Forest in round two of the tournament.

Fresh off four days of rest, Notre Dame women’s basketball defeated the Louisville Cardinals 77-68 in Friday’s ACC quarterfinals. While the Irish came ready to play, Louisville did not. After scraping by an abysmal Boston College team in the second round on Thursday, the Cardinals looked tired, lacking some of the physicality and edge that had defined the team throughout this season.

Last week, Anthony Rendon, Angels third baseman, found himself unintentionally viral. In a spring training media availability session, Rendon was asked about his perspective on baseball. Rendon is known for being blunt, but these most recent comments take blunt to a new level.

Those who know me well know I have no shortage of unusually strange beliefs, many of which I am firm and passionate about. Of course, I acknowledge the unusual nature of my beliefs and I don’t expect others to share in my opinions. One such is my love of Purcell Pavilion. Over my four years at Notre Dame, Purcell Pavilion has become one of my favorite places on this campus. It helps that I love the game of basketball, but after watching hundreds of games there, even when Notre Dame loses, I can’t help but admire the arena itself.

No matter the setback Notre Dame women’s basketball has faced this year, they keep fighting back. Fresh off the program’s worst regular-season scoring effort at Purcell Pavilion in 20 years, the Irish used the entirety of their roster to beat Duke 70-62 at Cameron Indoor Stadium.

A storied tradition at the heart of Notre Dame's campus, Bengal Bouts is back. The program traces its roots back to 1920 when it was established by legendary football coach Knute Rockne as an off-season conditioning regimen for his players. However, it wasn't until 1931 that Bengal Bouts discovered its true purpose — serving the minority Catholic community in Bangladesh. Today, the club strives to “strong bodies fight, that weak bodies may be nourished,” echoing its commitment to supporting the Congregation of Holy Cross missions in Bangladesh.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — In recent years, after every Notre Dame women’s basketball leap, there seems to be a corresponding dip. Thursday night added to the program’s history with an embarrassing seven-point loss to No. 15 Louisville. Coming off a tough Monday loss at North Carolina State, the Cardinals bounced back to beat a Notre Dame team that ended up defeating itself.
