ND Volleyball: Notre Dame sweeps two road wins

The Irish evened their Big East conference record with a pair of straight-set road victories. Wins against Pittsburgh and West Virginia helped them reclaim in-conference confidence and live up to their second rank in the preseason Big East Coaches' Poll.

Irish score most since Holtz finale

Notre Dame's 59 points were the most points scored since Lou Holtz's last game home game as head coach Nov. 23, 1996, when the Irish defeated Rutgers, 62-0. The teams' combined total of 92 points was the most in Notre Dame Stadium history. The previous mark was 90 points in a 46-44 triple-overtime loss to Navy in 2007.

Air Force and Notre Dame combined for 92 points Saturday, lighting up the Notre Dame Stadium scoreboard like never before. Both teams combined for 1,125 total offensive yards — 565 for Air Force (3-2) and 560 for Notre Dame (4-2) — in an offensive show-and-tell.

Last weekend, the Irish jumped out with leads against Cincinnati and Louisville only to relinquish them later. The goal this week when the Irish travel to away contests at Pittsburgh and West Virginia is to finish the games strong.

Last year, No. 1 Notre Dame saw its season end in the Frozen Four with a 4-3 loss to eventual national champion No. 8 Minnesota-Duluth. This year, the Irish will open their season seeking retribution for that game — and the Bulldogs will make sure that game is firmly planted in Notre Dame's mind.

Heading into week 5 in the NFL, signs of a heated debate between owners and players are hard to find. Attendance remains at record levels, players and owners are still making money hand-over-fist and ESPN, NBC, CBS and FOX have all retained television rights.

September may be filled with excitement over the new season, and November may hold the push for a BCS bowl, but for this year's Irish, October is the most important month of the season. Four weeks from now, when Halloween festivities are in full swing, we'll know whether the Irish have been unmasked or whether the start of the season was the only time Notre Dame donned a costume.
