Don't balance the budget on the backs of the poor

·

About how much of the U.S. budget do you think is spent on foreign aid? Twenty-five percent? Maybe 20 percent? Actually, foreign aid is less than 1 percent of the U.S. budget. Poverty-focused international assistance is a mere 0.6 percent of the U.S. budget, and it is in danger of being drastically cut due to the debt crisis.

Date to the Dillon dance?

·

Hello ladies. Look at your man, now back to this, now back to your man, now back to this. Sadly, he isn't handsome and charming like the men I am speaking for (unless he lives in Dillon, in which case you are a lucky lady indeed). But for all you ladies who do not have the great fortune of having a Dillon man, I bring good news. Dillon Hall will be having a dance next Friday night, Nov. 11, and you and a friend are invited to the greatest night of your lives. Two men are seeking dates. One is tall dark and handsome, and really, really ridiculously good looking (in fact, you might even say male model caliber). The other is not so tall, not so dark, but does he get the fire started both on and off the dance floor. Ladies, if you and a friend are interested in having one of the most epic Friday nights of your semester, nay, your college career, then email sfitzge3@nd.edu. You will not be disappointed.

Welcome to the Cultural Revolution

·

Cultural changes do not happen overnight. Like a slowly steamed dumpling pot, the gradual changes came from within. The raging Korean parties and exclusive Asian manifestations have remained the same. But we have changed.

You're a saint ... or you sure could be!

·

Certainly you can remember times when you've heard people say of someone heroic, or who has endured great suffering with patience and grace, "She's a saint!" or, "He's a saint!" Perhaps you've even heard it said of one of your own parents (though surely not because raising you caused them to endure great suffering). We celebrated the Feast of All Saints on Tuesday, giving us the opportunity to remember the big names like Francis, Therésè or Augustine, along with many others officially recognized by the Church for their holiness. All Souls' Day yesterday was a day to give thanks for the people we know and those we'll never know whose lives have allowed others to see God at work in the world a little more clearly.

The Bro Code

·

One of the goals of this column is to help create an environment where authentic, healthy relationships can flourish. As we continue on this journey, it is necessary for us to examine the unique forces that influence, prescribe and direct our thoughts and actions, both overtly and covertly.

The rationale for a #blankObserver

·

In the 45 years since The Observer printed its first issue, the world has changed a lot. Notre Dame became a coeducational university. Bellbottoms went out of style and never came back. And most importantly, the Internet as we now know it came into being. Because of that, the way we receive news is completely different today than it was in 1966.

A Promise, A Purpose

·

In November 1966, John Lennon met Yoko Ono, California elected Ronald Reagan governor and David Schwimmer – better known as Ross Geller – was born.

Awareness benefits all

·

The campus wide e-mail once a week covering the latest sexual assault on campus has, unfortunately, become a little too familiar to us here at Notre Dame. On campus, while we know we are safe, there is always that statistical probability for which we can never be fully prepared. Although we can do our part to remain safe and use various strategies to caution against an undesirable incident, we definitely must never underestimate the traumatic experiences of those unfortunate enough to have lived through such a tragedy.

Golden evening at the Golden Dome

·

How is your love life? Are you in a happy, long-term relationship? Are you out and about, looking for a mate? Or are you thinking there is no one out there for you and you're thinking about giving up casting your net into the sea?

NBA players overseas

·

Looks like Kobe Bryant won't be wearing the Laker purple and gold at all this year. No, he didn't get traded, but the increasing hostilities between NBA owners and the Players Association is making it more and more likely there will be no season this year.

Lauren Studios under fire

·

I'm not a big fan of protest — and I don't plan to Occupy Wall Street now or in the near future — but when something's wrong, it's wrong and deserves to be addressed.

Groupon - the financial crisis reincarnated

·

Welcome to the Groupon Economy. We've entered a new age where coupon-clipping grandmas of the world live in harmony with 20-something-year-olds. Labeled by "Forbes Magazine" as the fastest growing company ever, Groupon merges internet retail with brick-and-mortar stores, providing cost-conscious customers staggering discounts for everyday products and services.

A persevering peace

·

Recently I was fortunate to hear AFL-CIO president Richard Trumka give his analogy for any social movement: a dummy that is hit by a linebacker during practice. When the dummy is first hit, it recoils, pushing the linebacker back; however, as the linebacker continues to push, he feels the dummy start to slide forward, and the harder he pushes, the faster and easier it begins to slide. Any social movement, Trumka meant, takes perseverance no matter how hard the surrounding forces cause it to recoil.

The Observer

The real points for the protesters

·

The Occupy Wall Street protests started out as a small movement, but have since grown into an international phenomenon. This has been fueled by public anger over slow economic growth in developed countries, a highly disproportional distribution of wealth and continued frustration with the role that money plays in determining politics.

Asian Allure on the horizon

·

I left my family 8,500 miles away in Hyderabad, India. But I've found a whole new family here at Notre Dame. Right from international orientation, where I met my some of my best friends, to today, heading to rehearsal for Asian Allure, the time I've spent so far has been scary, interesting and thoroughly enjoyable. As an international student, the Asian American Association was one of the first few places I was introduced to other Asian students, both from abroad and from the United States.

What do you get when you lock the leaders of the EU into a conference room and tell them they can't come out until they have a comprehensive plan to save the continent from impending financial doom?

Sister, sister

·

I spent the summer before my senior year of college living in a convent. In Kansas City, Mo., 1,500 miles away from home. And it was one of the best summers of my life.
