For the past year the coveted Cricket Stick has resided in Carroll Hall. But Sunday at 2 p.m. "the stick" makes it way back to Riehle Field to be claimed by the winner of the Fisher-Carroll game.
The trophy, a replica of Knute Rockne's old walking stick, is awarded annually to the winning team, which keeps it until the next meeting.
Last year Carroll won the game for the first time in almost a decade and they are recharged to defend their title. However, Fisher will surely put up a fight.
Fisher looks to continue their winning ways after a season-opening shutout over Knott.
The Fisherman played a smash-mouth style game with a strong defense and tough running.
The return of starting running back Tom Sullivan should help the offense improve after scoring only one touchdown last week.
The team's defense was able to shut down Knott's passing game and should match up well against Carroll.
The Vermin come into the matchup after a 6-0 win over Siegfried last week.
Sorin vs. Siegfried
Sorin and Siegfried come into their Men's Interhall blue league game Sunday at 3 p.m. with a sense of urgency as playoff implications are on the line for both squads.
"While every game is important, this game obviously has heightened meaning," Sorin captain Pete Laviorini said.
"But we're fairly confident that we can win this week and carry that momentum through the rest of the season."
Both teams come into Sunday's game with 1-1 records meaning the loser of the contest will likely be out of the playoff picture.
Sorin, coming into the game off a 12-0 loss to Zahm, has made several adjustments to an offense that struggled to put points on the board in their last game.
Zahm vs. St Ed's
Zahm looks to keep its record a clean 3-0 Sunday at 1 p.m. at Riehle Field as the Bats face off against the winless St. Ed's Stedsmen.
Riding a two-game winning streak, Zahm enters the game as a favorite having knocked off Sorin last week, 12-0.
Bats captain Pat Gourley insisted that while last week's win was big, his team is still focused on the task at hand.
"This league is unpredictable," Gourley said. "Anybody can beat anybody on a given day."
"We'll be ready."
Gourley named tight end Seth Freiesleben and wide receiver Kris Patterson as impact players.
Meanwhile, the Stedsmen will take the field for the first time in two weeks, as they are coming off of a Week 2 bye.
The last time St. Ed's took the field, it fell 6-0 to Sorin.
Team captain Dan Ward said the team has taken full advantage of the extra week. "We took advantage of our time off to take a good look at Zahm and get ready for their schemes," Ward said. "They didn't have that opportunity, and I feel that strategically, we will be better prepared."
Ward indicated that his team is mentally ready for the challenge of facing the undefeated Bats.
"Our guys are really pumped up," he said.
"We really feel that we should have beaten Sorin. Our offense moved the ball well against them [Sorin], but anytime we came close to scoring, we turned it over."
While the Stedsmen captain would not acknowledge a specific standout performer, he did say that he expects the offense to rise to the occasion against a tough Zahm team.
Ward also noted that there is a definite sense of urgency for his team, as another loss would drop them to 0-2.
"We definitely need to win this game, especially since we feel that we have the capability of making it to the playoffs," he said.
