Calvin held a 5-0 lead in the top of the second inning Tuesday, but it was all downhill from there as Saint Mary's came from behind to win 8-7. The Belles went on to complete the home sweep with a 3-0 victory in the following game.
"We trust our offense," Saint Mary's head coach Erin Sullivan said. "We didn't panic and just took it one hit at a time."
Trailing by five runs, Saint Mary's cut the lead to three when third baseman Laura Heline hit a two-run homer in the second inning.
Calvin responded and built upon its lead with two runs in the top of the third on RBI singles by left fielder Erin Conrad and shortstop Jeane Cole.
The Belles bounced right back, scoring three runs in the bottom half of the inning. Shortstop Sara Miesle singled in a run, and then scored on a two-run error along with catcher Ashley Fusaro.
Saint Mary's tied the game in bottom of the sixth. Belles sophomore McKenna Corrigan hit an RBI single and Katie Rashid scored a run on an error.
Miesle gave the Belles the lead in the bottom of the seventh, singling to drive in the winning run.
Saint Mary's right-hander Bridget Grall started on the mound but struggled as she battled a cold. Freshman Calli Davison took over on the mound in the top of the fourth
"We wanted to back her up and help her out," Belles leftfielder Kristen Amram said. "Our team couldn't give up, we never give up."
Saint Mary's carried the momentum of their first win into the second game of the doubleheader.
Sullivan said Calvin seemed to be fading after losing the first game and Amram said the Belles stayed focused. Amram pitched and only allowed one hit in the second game.
"We tried to keep our mental game up," Amram said. "We tried to stay loud and keep fighting."
Saint Mary's senior Audrey Gajor singled in the top of the third giving the Belles a 2-0 lead and then got another RBI single in the top of the fifth to secure the 3-0 win.
The doubleheader against Calvin was the end to a four-day run of eight games for Saint Mary's. The Belles went 7-1 - exceeding Sullivan's hope of a .500 run.
"We are going to go easy and go over the little things [in the next few days]," Sullivan said. "Take that time to relax and get mentally ready."
Saint Mary's record now stands at 21-7 overall and 7-1 in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA).
The 21 wins are the highest the Belles have seen since joining the MIAA in 1998.
Saint Mary's will play Tri-State at home April 17.
