Track and Field: Battle of Kentuckiana goes to southern schools

Coming off a strong outing at Border Battle Kentuckiana, members of the Irish squad will travel to Walnut, Calif., and West Lafayette, Ind., for the Mt. SAC Relays and Purdue Rankin Invitational, respectively.
 

The Irish picked up 35 top-five finishes to go along with six wins on the campus of the University of Louisville over the weekend.
 

Notre Dame and Indiana fell just short against Kentucky and Louisville, by a score of 100-96 in the men's event. The Kentucky schools also won the women's event, 103-99.
 

Sophomore Molly Hirt placed first for the Irish in the women's 5,000 meters, senior Matt Schipper won in the men's pole vault, senior Joanna Schultz took first in the women's 400, junior Justin Schneider earned a win in men's javelin and freshman Nevada Sorensen took top honors in the women's 100-meter hurdles.
 

Junior Kelly Langhans finished second in the 800 event with a time of 2:10:01. Junior teammate Natalie Johnson finished just behind her with a time of 2:10.12.
Senior Elise Knutzen won the women's javelin at 42.09 meters.
 

Junior Edward Hitchler finished fifth in the men's 400 with a time of 48.24.
Sophomore Mitch Gormley finished third in the men's hammer throw with a throw of 54.47 meters. Junior Greg Davis was right behind with a throw of 53.21 meters.
 

The Irish have two more events to compete in before the Big East championships, which will be held in two weeks. They travel to Des Moines, Iowa, for the Drake Relays and Hillsdale, Mich., for the Hillsdale Relays next weekend.
