Crime alert provides details on suspect

Man with knife in Stinson-Remick apprehended by NDPD, booked into county jail

The suspect was described as white male with a black Under Armour hat, black t-shirt, black pants and gray shoes

A man with a knife allegedly approached a woman in a lab in Stinson-Remick Hall of Engineering on Monday around 9:30 a.m., an ND Crime Alert email reported. The man instructed her to close the windows before another person entered the room, at which point the man concealed the knife and asked for the restroom before departing.

The email was sent to students at 12:32 p.m. Subsequently, Saint Mary’s College students were informed through a forwarded email.

The email contained images, a description and the last known location of the suspect.

“The suspect, a white male, is described as wearing dark colored clothing, including a black Under Armour baseball cap, black T-shirt, black pants and white shoes. He had dark facial hair, including a mustache and beard or goatee. He was last seen heading south on Notre Dame Avenue,“ the email read.

NDPD apprehended a suspect near 12:30 p.m. following updates from the community and asks that anyone who has further information to contact the department.

In April 2025, a spokesperson for the University stated to The Observer that crime alerts are only sent when there is an ongoing threat and a warning can help prevent similar crimes.

UPDATE: May 19, 10:55 a.m.

A University spokesperson confirmed that the suspect was booked into St. Joseph County Jail at approximately 6:55 p.m. Monday.

The details shared by the spokesperson match St. Joseph County Jail records for the booking of Alan Patrick Arceneaux, age 37.

Arceneaux is classified as a pre-trial inmate and is being held without bail. He has been charged with intimidation and threat to commit a forcible felony along with criminal confinement.

Editor’s Note: A previous version of this article stated incorrectly that Holy Cross College students received an email regarding the incident.
