The United States Golf Association (USGA) announced Friday that the Warren Golf Course at Notre Dame will host the 2019 U.S. Senior Open, with the dates for the event being set from June 27-30.
Designed by former professional golfer Ben Crenshaw and co-designer Bill Coore, the Warren Golf Course opened in 2000 and will be the first collegiate golf course to host a U.S. Senior Open.
“The USGA is proud to partner with the University of Notre Dame, an institution whose national and international student body is reflective of the 156-player field in the U.S. Senior Open Championship,” Stuart Francis, the USGA Championship Committee chairman said in a press release. “The U.S. Senior Open is senior golf’s most coveted championship and we know the Warren course will examine the players’ skills as they compete for the Francis D. Ouimet Memorial Trophy.”
The Warren also hosted the Women's Amateur Public Links in 2010 and has played host to other local qualifying tournaments for USGA events.
“The selection of the Warren Golf Course at Notre Dame as site for the 2019 U.S. Senior Open is a significant endorsement of the quality and national standing of the golf course,” Notre Dame director of athletics Jack Swarbrick said in a press release. “We’re thrilled to have the opportunity for a USGA event of this magnitude to be played on our campus. This is a week-long event that will provide substantial economic impact to the Michiana community.”
The U.S. Senior Open is open to any professional golfer or amateur with a handicap index of 3.4 or less over the age of 50.
