Edward J. Mayo Jr., former marketing professor at Notre Dame, died Friday at age 78 from long-term illness, the University announced in a news release Wednesday.
Mayo worked at the University from 1970 to 1980 as a marketing professor at Mendoza College of Business, and as an adjunct professor after his retirement in 1980. Mayo also previously served as a professor at Western Michigan University.
Mayo, a Los Angeles native, was a “scholar, writer and teacher at heart,” the release said.
Mayo served in the Air Force in Fairbanks, Alaska from 1962 to 1968 and received the Western Michigan University Teaching Excellence Award in 1993.
Mayo is survived by his wife of 45 years and his four children.
A funeral Mass will be held in Mayo’s memory at 11 a.m. Thursday at Our Lady of the Lake in Holland, Mich. A visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Donations in Mayo’s memory may be made to Special Olympics Michigan.
