HCC tennis splits series against IUW

After 18 days away from the Eck Tennis Pavilion, the Holy Cross Men’s and Women’s teams resumed their seasons last weekend.

HCC Women's vs IUW

The No. 16 Women’s team (4-6) played two matches, the first on March 24th and an exhibition on the 25th.

In match one, the Saints played the No. 17 Indiana Wesleyan University Wildcats.

In the doubles portion, the Saints went a combined 1-2 against the Wildcats, with freshman Victoria Savvides and junior Anna Beer getting the lone win for the Saints, 6-4.

In singles, the Saints finished 0-3 alongside three did-not-finishes.

Savvides lost her set in two highly contests, 6-7 and 4-6. Junior Helga Lopez lost her set 0-6 and 1-6, while junior Diane Maillotte lost 4-6 before falling 0-6.

Junior Kia Carvalho-Landell, Beer and senior Clara Ruediger had the three DNFs.

HCC Women's vs University of Chicago

After their 0-4 loss to Indiana Wesleyan, the Saints turned their attention to the University of Chicago in an exhibition matchup.

In the doubles series against the Maroons, Lopez and Carvalho-Landell earned the Saints' lone win, defeating the Chicago duo of Shianna Guo and Nicole Geller 8-6.

In the singles portion of the match, the Saints were swept 0-6 though the winning doubles team continued to play well.

Carvalho-Landell came up short to Geller, losing her first set 2-6 and her second 5-7. Lopez had a strong first set, losing narrowly by a score of 5-7 before being swept 0-6 by Miranda Yuan.

Though the exhibition match against the University of Chicago did not contribute to the Saints' overall record, the loss to IUW did, and the Saints find themselves 4-6 on the year.

The women’s squad is now 1-4 in its last five contests and has just one matchup against Marian University (RV) before starting conference play.

The Saints have played Marian just once when the two teams met last year. They lost a tightly contested match, 3-4.

The match is slated for March 31 at 7:30 p.m. at the Eck Tennis Pavilion.

HCC Men's vs IUW

The Holy Cross Men’s tennis team also faced Indiana Wesleyan University, though it had a much better outing than the women’s team.

In doubles, the Saints defeated the Wildcats 2-1, with freshman Luca McManus and junior Will Page winning their set 6-4. Sophomore Ciaran McCarthy and Junior Laurenz Flender combined for a 6-2 victory.

In singles play, The Saints won 3-2, with one DNF. McManus and freshman Polis Koursaros both went the distance, playing three sets each, where they clinched crucial victories for the Saints.

Senior Ryan Lee had an excellent outing, defeating his opponent 6-1 and then 6-0.

Both Page and McCarthy lost two close sets, while sophomore Perry Gregg recorded a DNF.

With the 4-2 win, the Saints improve to a 4-2 record. Like the women’s team, they will face Marian University (RV) on March 31 at 7:30 p.m. before entering conference play.

The Saints beat Marian 4-3 last February in the only meeting between the two programs.
