The fall slate is starting to wind down for Notre Dame on the links. Earlier this week, though, the men's team had a special opportunity to bring competition back to South Bend. Notre Dame hosted the annual Fighting Irish Classic from Oct. 1-2 at its very own Warren Golf Course. The Irish have typically fared well in the event, and this year was no different. After finishing in the back half of the field in each of their previous two competitions, they vaulted back into the top five for the first time since their season opener. Notre Dame finished fourth, shooting two over par for the tournament.
Notre Dame was one of just three schools to have three golfers finish in a tie for 15th or better. However, it wasn't the veterans of this event leading the way for the Irish. Freshman Rocco Salvitti was one of just four golfers in the field to break or match par every round, finishing tied for seventh. His 68 in the third round was tied with fellow freshman Jacob Modleski for the lowest round by an Irish golfer over the two-day tournament. Modleski ultimately placed just outside of the top 10, two strokes behind Salvitti's 208 mark.
Not to be outdone by the youngsters, graduate student Palmer Jackson was close behind. He shot 71-71-69 to tie for 15th place. Sophomore Nate Stevens and senior Angelo Marcon also improved as the competition progressed. Their best scores each came in the final round, and they both finished tied for 36th with scores of 216. Notre Dame finished 12 strokes back of first-place Tennessee and five behind Northwestern and Indiana, who tied for second.
The Irish women's team, meanwhile, will hit the road this weekend for its fourth competition of the semester. They'll make their way to Princess Anne Country Club at Virginia Beach, Virginia, for the Evie Odom Invitational, hosted by Old Dominion. Their season has followed a nearly identical script as the men's team — top-five finish in their first event, followed by an 11th and eighth-place finish in the next two. The event will take place from Oct. 6-8.
Following that, both teams will cap off their fall seasons on an exciting note as they travel to Scotland for the 2023 St. Andrew's Links Collegiate Invitational from Oct. 23-25.
