2025 Observer Sports All-Commencement teams

Kavanagh, Citron lead All-Commencement teams as Athletes of the Year

Men’s sports

Chris Kavanagh, ND Lacrosse 

Male Athlete of the Year

Carrying on the lacrosse legacy of the Kavanagh family at Notre Dame, Chris leads the Irish with 36 goals and 25 assists in his senior season. His 61 points, 27 more than any other player on the team, helped the Irish capture another ACC regular-season championship in 2025.

Perry Gregg, HCC Tennis

A three-time NAIA All-American, Gregg did not slow down in 2025. The 6-foot-6 giant led the Saints to a 12-2 record and a Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) title, going 9-0 in the spring season.

Justin Janicke, ND Hockey

Justin Janicke broke out with career highs nearly across the board in his senior season, proving out in goals (15), assists (19) and points (34). The captain also led his team in power-play goals (8) and short-handed goals (2), helping Notre Dame to a Big Ten Tournament Semifinal appearance. 

Jack Kiser, ND Football

A leader like none other, Jack Kiser notched 90 total tackles, two forced fumbles and picked up the all-time games played record in his final year with the Irish. Captaining the Irish defense to one of the premier units in the nation, along with a trip to the national championship game, he left the program in a better place than when he found it.

Riley Leonard, ND Football

Leading the Irish to the National Championship, Duke transfer Riley Leonard started all 16 games as quarterback in 2024-25. Leonard passed for 2,861 yards, rushed for 906 and rounded out the season with 38 total touchdowns.

Ben Ramsey, ND Lacrosse

The captain and designated bagpiper for the Irish, short-stick defensive midfielder Ben Ramsey was an integral part of Notre Dame’s back-to-back title-winning teams. In 2025, Ramsey earned First Team All-American honors for the second year running. 

Matthew Roou, ND Soccer

Matthew Roou dominated all year long for the Irish, leading the ACC with 14 goals. Adding on four assists, Roou was deservingly awarded the ACC Offensive Player of the Year Award to cap off an incredible senior season. 

Martin Von Thun, HCC Soccer

Martin Von Thun captained the Saints in his 16 games this season, holding down a back line that allowed a mere 13 conference goals in 2024. His greatest contribution, however, came on the offensive end, scoring a decisive goal in the Saints’ upset win over Judson in the CCAC playoffs. 

Xavier Watts, ND Football

Safety Xavier Watts was selected by the Atlanta Falcons in the third round of the NFL Draft after his final season with the Irish. Starting in all 16 games, Watts finished 2024-25 with 82 total tackles and six interceptions, including a 100-yard pick-six against rivals USC.

Jared Zimbardo, ND Baseball

Jared Zimbardo has played 38 games in the Irish outfield in 2025 after transferring from Quinnipiac. He’s tallied 14 runs batted in and three home runs while posting a .299 batting average and .408 OBP.

Women’s sports

Sonia Citron, ND Basketball 

Female Athlete of the Year

Appearing in 32 games, Sonia Citron rounded out her senior season with 450 total points, averaging 14.1 per game on 48.4% from the field and 37.2% from three. She was recently selected second in the WNBA Draft by the Washington Mystics. 

Siona Chisholm, ND Cross Country

Siona Chisholm excelled on and off the track in her four years, earning ACC postgraduate scholarship recognition in 2025. She finished third at the Notre Dame Invitational with a personal-best 4:40.50 in the mile and secured 1st in the 3000 and 5000 at the Meyo Invitational and Wake Forest Invitational, respectively.

Nibi Ghosh, ND Tennis

Ghosh has been near-perfect in her senior season, boasting a 12-1 record in singles competition. Her experience helped launch Notre Dame to a top-25 rank in the country and a trip to the NCAA Tournament.

Kaylin Hsieh, ND Fencing

After taking a gap year in 2024 to train for the Olympics, Kaylin Hsieh soared in her return year, scoring second and fifth-place finishes at the ACC and NCAA tournaments, respectively. Hsieh played a vital role in the Irish’s team success as well, ultimately ending her career with four team national championships in as many seasons. 

Anna Holloway, ND Softball

Anna Holloway played 53 games in her final season, tallying five home runs and 17 runs batted in while boasting a .289 average. She notched her first career multi-home run game against CMU, which included a 3-RBI sixth inning that secured the Irish victory.

Liatu King, ND Basketball

Graduate forward Liatu King played a pivotal role on head coach Niele Ivey’s Irish squad, starting 33 of Notre Dame’s 34 games. The forward earned All-ACC Second Team honors after averaging 11.5 points and a program-record 10.4 rebounds per game.

Olivia Miles, ND Basketball

Olivia Miles started in all 34 games for the Irish, leading one of the best backcourts in the nation. In 2025, she earned Second Team All-American honors and All-ACC First Team after averaging 15.4 points and 5.8 assist per game.  

Jadin O’Brien, ND Track and Field

Jadin O’Brien completed the elusive three-peat in 2025, winning her third consecutive indoor national championship in the pentathlon with a personal-best score of 4596. O’Brien was in a field of her own, and she stamped her legacy as one of the best athletes in Irish history. 

Phyona Schrader, ND Volleyball

Senior setter Phyona Schrader did not lead the Irish in any traditional stat, but remarkably was second in kills (298), assists (489) and digs (313). She recorded 12 triple-doubles in those stat categories out of her 29 games played – the rest of the ACC combined for three triple-doubles. 

Grace Weigand, ND Lacrosse

Grace Weigand finished All-ACC Second Team as she scooped 31 ground balls and forced 18 turnovers. The team captain was a mainstay in the Irish’s top-15 ranked defensive unit, starting all 15 games.
