Holy Cross men's soccer falls to Loyola Chicago

Holy Cross looks to take a home win against St. Ambrose

After a 12-0 win over Calumet on senior night, Holy Cross College men’s soccer (5-5) fell to Loyola Chicago (4-3-3) at Loyola Soccer Park, 2-0.

The Ramblers entered the game coming off a 3-0 loss to ranked George Mason where they registered 12 shots but no goals. Two goals late during the 70th and 90th minutes of the game were the deciding factor that led to the Ramblers’ win.

The first half saw Holy Cross senior keeper Isaias Rubio play and save two shots on goal from the Ramblers, leading to a 0-0 tie heading into the half. It was the second half when Loyola began to probe the Saints defense and sophomore keeper Logan Kelly. The Ramblers’ goals came by way of sophomore forward Arved Von Vegesack and senior Hugo Udiales.

Kelly allowed one of those two goals before leaving the game late in the second half with an injury, thrusting freshman keeper Charlie Hasenour into the game. The Ramblers took advantage and put in their second goal after the switch.

As a team, Loyola registered six shots on goal and two saves while Holy Cross had two shots on goal and four saves.

Now the Saints will set their sights on heading home to Saints Field to take on conference opponent St. Ambrose (8-3). The Saints are currently 2-0 in conference.

That 2-0 start is the best start to a conference slate for Holy Cross since the 2019-2020 season in which they finished with an 8-4-2 record in conference play.

Rubio is currently the only Holy Cross player to win Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) defensive/offensive player of the week, being named defensive player of the week on Sept. 2. For St. Ambrose, Luiz Ferbeyre took home conference offensive player of the week honors on Sept. 23.

Holy Cross opened its season with a 1-1 record in August before tallying a 4-4 record in September.

St. Ambrose opened its 2025 season with three straight wins in August, continuing that winning streak two games into its September slate. The Bees enter this game in the midst of a two-game losing streak against conference foes Viterbo and Olivet Nazarene. In those two games, St. Ambrose was outscored nine goals to two. The Bees currently hold a 1-2 conference record.

The Saints will look to continue their strong conference play into October while the Bees will be hunting for their second conference win.

The game will take place at Saints Field on Saturday Oct. 4 with kickoff set for 12 p.m.
