This Sunday, the Saint Mary’s softball team hosted Goshen for a doubleheader at noon and 2 p.m., games which had been rescheduled from earlier this month. The Belles swept the Goshen Maple Leafs, winning the first game 13-5 and the second game 6-2. With these two wins, the Belles improved their season record to 9-11.
In game one, sophomore pitcher Ashlyn Yeo took the win as she pitched all five innings while allowing only three earned runs. She recorded one strikeout. This win moves Yeo to 3-4 on the season in the circle. In game two, senior captain and pitcher Sam Mikitka took her third win of the season on the mound. Mikitka threw all seven innings, allowing two unearned runs while striking out two batters.
The Belles offense showed up in the first game, crushing the Goshen pitching. Despite Goshen putting up an early run, Saint Mary’s responded by putting up three in the bottom half of the first inning. Going into the second inning, Goshen added on four more runs to take the 5-3 lead, but the Belles put up seven runs to retake the 10-5 lead. Neither team scored in the third or fourth inning, but in the fifth, the Belles added on the final three runs to collect the run-rule victory.
Offensively, the Belles were led by junior outfielder Allie Moss, who had two hits and three runs; sophomore outfielder Gia Schiavone, who totaled two hits, two runs and three RBIs; and sophomore second baseman Talia Jorgensen, who had two runs, two hits and one RBI. Additionally, freshman outfielder Isabelle Hochmuth sent a ball over the fence for her 2nd home run of the season.
Game two was more of a pitcher’s duel. Saint Mary’s still kicked off the game in the bottom of the first with two runs on the board. Neither team could scratch a run across in the second inning, but the Belles came through in the third inning adding two more to take the 4-0 lead. Another quiet fourth inning for both teams brought up the fifth, and the Belles added two more runs. Goshen, who had struggled to keep up with this strong Saint Mary’s attack, finally got onto the board in the top of the sixth with two runs.
Schiavone led the Belles offense with two runs, three hits and one RBI. Alongside her, Moss, Jorgensen and freshman infielder Molly Ryan all contributed a hit to the Belles’ win.
Next up for the Belles is a doubleheader against Kalamazoo over Easter weekend. The home series is set for April 4, with the first game set to start at 1 p.m. and the second at 3 p.m.
