Holy Cross men’s golf maintains consistency

Saints led by freshman Derek Darnell

In its season-opener in the Pretty Lake Intercollegiate tournament hosted by Bethel University, the Holy Cross men’s golf team played 54 holes over the span of two days, proving it to be a difficult course as the Saints placed eighth out of 10 teams. Sophomore Braeden Rooney shot a 77-74-77.

To end the month, the Saints played at home on the Blackthorn Golf Course, where they placed fifth out of eight teams. Freshman Derek Darnell shot the team’s lowest scores of 73 and 72, placing him ranked sixth individually out of 45 players.

At the start of October, the Saints faced off in the Fall Classic of Harbor Shores. The team placed fourth out of six, with freshman Beau Basney and junior Jack Stewart tying for 10th with scores of +18. Next, the Saints hosted the Saints Classic at the Warren Golf Course, placing sixth out of 11 teams. Darnell finished highest individually at 18th with a score of +19. To close out the month, the Saints played at the Rock Hollow Golf Club, hosting Indiana-Kokomo and Aquinas College. Darnell finished fourth individually, and sophomore Cole Shelton finished close behind, tied for seventh.

To kick off their spring season, the Saints played at the Rumble at Rend Lake, hosted by Olivet Nazarene University. The Saints finished third out of the five teams competing; their top finisher was junior Jack Stewart, who shot +12, tying him for fourth individually.

The team hosted an invitational at Knollwood Country Club, with their A and B teams placing fifth and sixth, respectively, out of six teams competing. The A team was one stroke off from placing them at fourth, but fell just short behind. Urbanski and Basney finished at the top individual, being tied ninth at a score of 14-over par.

The Saints were then invited to the LTU Spring Shootout, where they placed 11th out of 12. The last regular season the team played in was the Pilot Invitational, where the Saints ended strong, placing sixth out of 12, with Darnell once again finishing in the top 10.

The Saints wrapped up their season at the CACC Conference Championship, placing sixth out of nine teams and shooting a score of +114. Darnell placed highest individually at seventh with a tied score of +20. He was followed by senior Zach Toul, placing 18th with a score of +28, and Stewart, shooting +31, making him 21st.

The Saints had a consistent season, with standouts Darnell and Stewart leading the team on and off the course. Holy Cross will begin its 2026-27 season in early September, hoping to set the pace early for a strong season.
