I was filled with a sense of bittersweet nostalgia as I read “Dear Enemy” by Jean Webster, a book published in 1915. Written by one of my favorite authors from childhood, it recounted the life of a young college graduate who finds herself in charge of the children of a home for orphans. For a book that was written in the early 1900s, it was surprisingly feminist. I found myself laughing out loud at the snarky comments and sharp arrows that were clearly meant to pierce the thick walls of entrenched patriarchy. But what stayed with me beyond the last page was the exuberant joy that characterized the protagonist and the world she inhabited. In Webster’s world, the clouds made a very brief appearance, only to be chased away by the ever-present rays of sunshine and the laughter of the light-hearted protagonist.

It seems that the podcast has taken over America. Once classified as a wasteland for the have-been stars and pseudo-intellectuals, podcasts are as big as ever. They’re now treasure troves of life advice, gossip and scandals and (for some twisted reason) the indulgence of society’s obsession with true-crime investigation.

On Tuesday, Sept. 9, Saint Mary’s defeated Benedictine 3-1 to advance to 6-0 on their record-breaking season, while Benedictine’s loss ended their three-game win streak and dropped them to 4-5 on the season. Leading the Belles was junior middle hitter Caroline Carens, who last week was named Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) Player of the Week. She once again showed the Belle community how she earned that title as she led her team to victory against the Eagles.

Comedian Shane Gillis’ opening act before Zach Bryan received mixed reviews. On the one hand, there are those who deem his performance inappropriate for the family setting of a concert at a Catholic university. On the other hand, there are those who absolutely loved the set, thankful for the opportunity to see one of their favorite comedians in action. The most amusing contingent, in my opinion, are those who defend Shane Gillis’ performance as a championing of the First Amendment’s right to speech: a testament of American exceptionalism. As the title suggests, I have constructed and will propose a defense of Shane Gillis’ performance.

The recent ever-accelerating improvement of artificial intelligence chatbots has dominated the discussion cycles ad nauseam. Evidently, they are the first and flashiest step in a reframing of various educational, societal, economical and political issues. As with all emergent technologies, every facet of human civilization is being reevaluated, and the monetary incentives exacerbate the narratives of apparent progress. How much is this an economic exploit to take advantage of an obvious financial asset bubble? It is unknown, but one thing is certain — whichever form they take, these tools are here to stay and will change how humanity interacts with the world, and one another.
