Tales from Innsbruck
Hallo from Innsbruck, Austria! It’s been a whirlwind three months abroad. I've been learning to successfully navigate a new city, new classes and a new culture as well as adapting to being separated by an ocean and seven hours from the people and places I consider home.
The seven faces of giving thanks
While on my way to work on Thursday, waiting for a red light to change, I glanced at a lump of blankets piled in a bus stop shelter. A skinny, fragile hand extended from the mound and slowly fed morsels of a candy bar to a partially exposed, thin, drawn elderly jaw. With the Thanksgiving holiday approaching, I thought of my long-gone grandmother and wondered if someone would comfort this homeless soul with a turkey dinner. Then the bus drove on as her image flickered by me.

Jewish students’ event points toward liberatory possibilities
On Friday, Nov. 9, more than 80 people attended a three-hour conference at Notre Dame titled “A World Without Hate: A Discussion Against Anti-Semitism.” Organized by Jewish students (including myself) in just two weeks, the afternoon’s discussion included Latina, African-American, Muslim, Native American and queer speakers who connected their struggles to the fight against anti-Semitism. Despite the organizers’ divergent views on Israel, we all enthusiastically welcomed the support and participation of Student Voices for Palestine. Friday’s event brought up exciting possibilities for building transformative social justice coalitions.
