SMC is doing it right

·

Regarding medical amnesty in the Observer's Jan. 27 article, "ND explains lack of medical amnesty," Brian Coughlin stated, "It is hard to fathom one Notre Dame student acting so much out of a perceived self-interest that they may not help a fellow student in need because they are more worried about potential discipline."

Father, I have had impure thoughts'

·

I could never list all the things that I love about being a priest. There are very many. Of the top things that I love about being a priest is the incredible privilege that it is to hear confessions. I am always grateful to be able to be a minister, unworthy that I am, of God's grace and mercy in the confessional.

Protecting the right to choose

·

The recent issue of the availability of contraceptives on Notre Dame's campus has sparked much controversy. A letter from the officers of Notre Dame's Right to Life Club (Feb. 1) states that artificial contraception is "neither a ‘right' nor health care." I would like to respectively disagree.

Senior year, no regrets

·

This is it. The moment I've been waiting for my whole life. Tonight is the night I turn 21. When the clock strikes 12:00 and my Macbook calendar tells me it's finally Feb. 3, 2012, I'll let out a sigh of relief while casually sipping a legal cup of Franzia. Along with that sigh, though, I'll shed a tear or two. You see, I am the second-to-last last senior to turn 21 (Pat Coveney is last, in case you were wondering), and that is not an easy title to give up. You don't go all your life as the youngest person in the room just to be put on the same playing field as everyone else by some legal threshold. My time is here, but I'm not ready to go. What if I didn't have to?

Ron Paul's undesired candidacy

·

The GOP field currently features three presidential candidates who appear willing to do anything short of making a deal with the devil simply to be addressed as ‘Mr. President' come 2013. But the fourth candidate seems fine with keeping the title ‘Dr. Paul.' Just ask Ron Paul's campaign chairman, Jesse Benton, whose words were featured in a September issue of Time Magazine:

The magic of Superbowl Sundays

·

I'm a nostalgic person. Really, it's sometimes bad. I find myself at times not enjoying the present as much as I could be because I'm instead thinking of the past. I know I can't stop time or go back, but sometimes I wish I could.

Landlubbing pirate fighters

·

SOPA, PIPA, OPEN, ACTA — The music and movie industries are trying to tear the Internet to bits! When that which we love and hold dear is threatened, we grab our pitchforks, practice our battle yells and head for the streets. At least that's what we did on Jan. 18 when Wikipedia and its net-born pals decided to close for business in protest of the draconian bills sitting in Congress.

Contraception and dignity

·

In seeking to promote life, we, the officers of Notre Dame Right to Life, would like to articulate and defend the Catholic Church's clear and unchanging rejection of artificial contraception.

Mandate is an assault on Church

·

As a Catholic who firmly believes in the Church's teachings on sexuality morality, I wholeheartedly disagree with the new health care mandate issued by President Obama. This mandate, which calls for all employers, including Catholic hospitals and educational institutions, to provide health insurance that includes prescriptive contraceptives, surgical sterilization and abortifacient drugs to its employees, directly attacks the Church's pro-life principles. While an exemption is granted to religious groups who employ and serve only those who share their beliefs, the fundamental mission of Catholic-based organizations is to serve all people in need. Not even Jesus himself would qualify for this exemption!

Confession: I don't hate 3-D...

·

I never saw "Avatar." I know, cue gasps of shock and looks of disbelief. I've been dealing with it since 2009 when the subject of those weird blue people, James Cameron and his possible Oscar win were on everyone's mind. But I thought the movie looked like "Pocahontas," which I really only enjoyed because of the soundtrack, so I wasn't going to spend upwards of $15 to see another version of the same movie.

Irish hockey fans: Will you bring it?

·

Many thanks to the numerous members of the Notre Dame, Saint Mary's and Holy Cross community that have attended Fighting Irish Hockey games this season and otherwise enjoyed the Compton Family Ice Arena since it opened in October. Looking up to see 5,000 people in the stands at most games has just been tremendous. Your vocal support on so many occasions has served as a real boost to our team's performance in the new arena and we need that enthusiasm to continue to create a true home ice advantage this year and in the future.

How Elmo and weed can make you wealthy

·

Since the birth of the Internet, many a person has sought to capitalize upon the web's infinite potential. Many have succeeded, but countless more have failed, succumbing to the economic difficulties that arise from an Internet that changes ‘business as usual' in every single respect.

Share stories: Show Some Skin

·

When it comes to discussions about racial and ethnic diversity at Notre Dame, we often focus on numerical data that show progress, or lack thereof: the percentages of students and faculty of color on campus, the under-representation of minorities in fields like science and engineering, the increase in minority student clubs, etc. As a 1984 graduate, I have seen much-needed progress in diversity at Notre Dame, especially in the last 20 years.

Believe the hype

·

I am a basketball fan from Los Angeles who long ago decided to take the righteous path and become a Clippers fan, rather than jump on the Lakers bandwagon.

The Observer

Welcome to Lob City, please enjoy your stay

·

Andrew Gastelum's article ("Don't get sick with Lob City Disorder," Jan. 26) regarding how he believes the hype over the Los Angeles Clippers is undeserved proves the typical Laker fan's denial of reality.
