Inclement weather may very well be the only thing that can slow down Notre Dame women’s soccer at this point. Sunday’s match at Indiana was postponed, forcing the Irish to wait an additional four days before resuming their special start to the 2022 season.
Notre Dame men’s soccer will begin conference play this weekend with a top-25 matchup against No. 24 Syracuse this Saturday. The No. 22 Irish will enter the contest at 1-1-1 following a closely contested 1-1 draw against DePaul at Alumni Stadium this week.
Well, Week 1 is officially in the books, and quite honestly, it could not have gone better. And yes, I include the Notre Dame loss in that, if only because ZeLO quite frankly nailed the pick. It still had Ohio State as a favorite, but by less than ESPN and (factoring in home-field advantage) had ND as a 10-point underdog.
1987 - Women’s Fencing National Championship
Women’s soccer took off across the country in the 1990s. Kate Markgraf (then Sobrero), general manager of the U.S. National Women’s National Team (USWNT), ensured she was a part of that game-changing decade as a player on the collegiate, professional and international levels.
The 70’s brought a wave of change for Notre Dame as the landmark Title IX amendment impacted the gender barrier in both education and athletics. It has been 50 years since this historic decision, and the anniversary happens to correspond with Notre Dame’s birth of co-education in 1972. After 130 years as a predominantly male school, the first group of women — composed of 125 freshman and 240 transfers — enrolled in 1972. This number equated to 7 males for every 1 female. Today, females make up almost half of the student population at Notre Dame. The following year 417 more females joined the ranks.
In 1976, tennis became the first varsity women’s team recognized by the University of Notre Dame. The day it became official then associate athletic director Colonel Stevens declared: “the dames have truly arrived.”
When one thinks of Notre Dame’s powerhouse athletic programs, plenty of options come to mind. The football team is an iconic staple of the University’s brand and the fencing team is in the midst of building a modern dynasty. But, there’s one team with a history of success you probably haven’t heard enough about: women’s soccer.

After their game against Indiana was canceled last week due to poor weather conditions, the 22nd-ranked Irish tied DePaul in Alumni Stadium Tuesday night.
The Saint Mary’s Belles women’s soccer team will search for their first win of the nascent season Wednesday, in their road contest against the Aurora University Spartans.
Last weekend was a great weekend for college football. Besides Georgia’s annihilation of Oregon, most of the games that received media attention answered the bell. Week 2 presents an interesting slate of games, as some teams begin conference play. Many other Power 5 teams have tune-up games against lesser programs. Without further ado, here are my top 5 games to watch for week 2 of college football. (Lines are as of opening.)
After a far-too-long offseason (and a smattering of Week 0 matchups), college football is back, and with its triumphant return came everything we have come to know and love about the sport. A wild opening weekend featured upsets, dominating performances, nail-biting finishes, and several teams finding bizarre ways to win. Here are five of the most notable happenings from Week 1.
On Sunday night, at about 11:15 PM, Brian Kelly held up a single finger. It proved to be a decision he may come to regret. Quarterback Jayden Daniels had just led the LSU Tigers on a miraculous 99-yard drive with just 80 seconds left in the game, culminating in what appeared to be the game-tying touchdown as time expired.
Last Thursday, the Saint Mary’s cross country team began their 2022 season in the annual Manchester Hokum Karen. It was a hot evening in North Manchester, Indiana, a town of a few thousand west of Fort Wayne and south of South Bend.
“There’s no such thing as a moral victory.”
Notre Dame cross country got its 2022 season underway on Friday, competing in the Winrow-Valparaiso Invite just 58.7 miles west of South Bend. The Fighting Irish are no strangers to the Valpo course, having opened the season there all but twice in the 21st century (2002 and 2020). Both the men’s and women’s teams - coming off top-10 finishes at the 2021 NCAA Championships - flexed their muscles with a sweep of this year’s invite, even with a host of new names leading the charge.

After picking up her first collegiate head coaching win last weekend, Salima Rockwell must wait another weekend to find her second. The Notre Dame volleyball squad traveled west but dropped a pair of games, losing to Boise State and Long Beach State in successive nights. The Boise State clash was a four-setter, while the latter was a straight sets loss.
