Belles open their season, hope to better their record

As the winter sports season approaches, Saint Mary’s athletic spotlight will be falling on the basketball team, as they are the only sport in this season. The team will be returning to the court led by head coach Melissa Makielski, who has been the head coach of Belles basketball since the fall of 2016. The rest of the coaching staff will consist of returning assistant coach Hannah Marko, joined by new assistant coach Mark Smith.

Week 11 of College Football: Top 5 games

North Carolina has run the table since their loss to Notre Dame, making the Irish win look all the better. The Tar Heels are currently 8-1 and are favorites to win the ACC Coastal division. The line favors Wake Forest, but the Tar Heels are 5-0 on the road this season. UNC quarterback Drake Maye has been lighting it up the entire season, passing for nearly 3,000 yards and 31 touchdowns compared to just three interceptions. The fact that he is putting up these gaudy numbers as a freshman should be extremely encouraging to Tar Heel fans. Maye is absolutely destroying defenses and could even garner some consideration for the Heisman. Wake Forest is coming off of two straight losses, which has seemingly eliminated them from conference contention. The only thing they have left to play is the role of spoiler; they could derail North Carolina’s hopes for a New Year’s Six Bowl. After a great start to the season, Demon Deacons quarterback Sam Hartman has thrown 3 interceptions in each of his last two games. North Carolina has a porous pass defense, so there will probably be holes in the coverage.

914 days later, Diggs and Estime outclass Shipley

On May 5, 2020, the No. 2 running back in the 2021 recruiting cycle made his college decision known. Will Shipley was a five-star recruit granted a .9839 grade by 247 Sports Composite. Additionally, he was ranked the 32nd best player regardless of position in 2021. Notre Dame was considered a favorite for Shipley for a long time. The Irish heavily pursued the North Carolina native, making him their clear priority at the position. Yet, on that fateful May 5, Shipley spurned the Irish in favor of the Clemson Tigers, joining Dabo Swinney’s squad.
