The NHL is back on the ice after this weekend's opening slate of games, and that brings with it all the excitement of the early season, as teams try to start out hot, shuffle their lines and finalize which players from training camp will grind out a spot on the team.

While the spotlight typically shines on players who light up the stat sheet, coaches often talk about the unsung contributors whose impact goes much further than a box score. Irish senior liberoFrenchy Silva is one of those players, Irish coach Debbie Brown said.

Hockey: Irish split series with champs

Following just one exhibition match and a handful of practices, Notre Dame eased into its regular season schedule with a pair of games against the defending national champions in front of 6,000 hostile fans. After losing 4-3 to Minnesota-Duluth in the opener, the Irish (1-1) rallied to take a 5-3 win over the Bulldogs (1-1) on Saturday.

ND Women's Golf: Irish disappoint in Invitational

The Irish enjoyed their most successful season ever last year, reaching the NCAA championship for the first time in program history. They won four tournaments, and Irish coach Susan Holt was named Big East Coach of the Year. That previous level of success, however, has yet to carry over to this season.

Men's Soccer: Hanging Tough

The Irish needed extra time once again in their contest against Connecticut, but even in 110 minutes of play, neither team was able to notch a goal.

ND Volleyball: Notre Dame sweeps two road wins

The Irish evened their Big East conference record with a pair of straight-set road victories. Wins against Pittsburgh and West Virginia helped them reclaim in-conference confidence and live up to their second rank in the preseason Big East Coaches' Poll.

Irish score most since Holtz finale

Notre Dame's 59 points were the most points scored since Lou Holtz's last game home game as head coach Nov. 23, 1996, when the Irish defeated Rutgers, 62-0. The teams' combined total of 92 points was the most in Notre Dame Stadium history. The previous mark was 90 points in a 46-44 triple-overtime loss to Navy in 2007.

Week Six: Air Force

Air Force and Notre Dame combined for 92 points Saturday, lighting up the Notre Dame Stadium scoreboard like never before. Both teams combined for 1,125 total offensive yards — 565 for Air Force (3-2) and 560 for Notre Dame (4-2) — in an offensive show-and-tell.
