A remedy for rallies

·

I read Andrew Romano's letter, "Bring back the rallies" (Nov. 8), and I have to agree with him that the pep rallies are not that fun to go to, and I personally don't try very hard to go to them. However I disagree with his belief that the location of the pep rally is a major factor.

Some traditions aren't worth keeping

·

The Notre Dame student body is composed of essentially good, intelligent, compassionate and generous people who want to make a positive difference in the world. Unfortunately, we don't always act in appropriate ways. One particular decision that has caused a lot of hurt is the "Zahm's gay" chant. It goes, "Ole, ole, ole, ole, Zahm's gay, Zahm's gay!" This chant is hateful and intolerant toward the gay students at Notre Dame, and toward gay people everywhere.

Brotherly love

·

I am writing in response to the Nov. 8 article entitled "The Bro Code" by Dr. G. David Moss. I believe Dr. Moss has used his opinion to shape the facts, rather than the other way around. He has assumed that the code of the younger generation is immoral simply because it is not his own. With all due respect, Dr. Moss condemns that which he clearly does not understand.

From scavengers to sovereigns

Roughly 300 years before the birth of Christ, in a Corinthian alley, two very different interpretations of the legacy of Socrates came face to face.

Bring back the rallies

·

Please, please, please bring back pep rallies to Notre Dame. Yes, there is still an event on Friday nights that goes by this name, but pep rallies have been gone from Notre Dame for years.

Dancing in the moonlight

·

Has the redundancy of the weekend dorm party mode finally got to you? Do you want to be able to have an actual conversation with that interesting girl or guy without shouting? Want to make 11/11/11 special? Then gentlemen, the time has finally come to impress the ladies with your dancing prowess (and we're not talking about swaying back and forth monotonously.)

The Bro Code

·

One of the goals of this column is to help create an environment where authentic, healthy relationships can flourish. As we continue on this journey, it is necessary for us to examine the unique forces that influence, prescribe and direct our thoughts and actions, both overtly and covertly.

30's lessons

·

Every time Thursday night rolls around I can't help but wonder: When will "30 Rock" finally return to NBC?

A new way to review

·

It's that time of year to pick classes again. After worrying about your DART time and dreading the inevitable small talk with your academic adviser that will result when you pick up your pin number, you start browsing the class search site and planning out your schedule for next semester. But what if the class is hard or the professor is terrible? You only want the best college experience possible, after all.

Love for Lafun

·

It may not be the exact crossroads of campus, but it's just about the crossroads of everything else. There is no other building on campus more chameleonic, more versatile, more multifaceted than the LaFortune Student Center, affectionately known as "LaFun."

A movement going nowhere

·

I write this column with great hesitation. Publication in The Observer and the attention of the Notre Dame-Saint Mary's community is far more recognition than this nonsensical demonstration deserves.

Don't write him off

·

The outlook for President Barack Obama's re-election is grim: unemployment is 9 percent and the economic recovery is weak. About 60 percent of Americans disapprove of how he is handling the economy, and a majority of Americans have an unfavorable view of health care reform.

Chipotle in the dining hall

·

As a junior moving off campus for senior year, I am facing many new choices. One of these choices is whether or not to purchase a meal plan.

Obama to GOP: 'Show me YOUR jobs'

·

The actual start of the presidential election season begins today — exactly one year from now countdowns to the weekend before the 2012 election. While GOP presidential hopefuls have campaigned for months to replace President Obama, the president just recently shifted from governing mode into campaign mode while promoting his new jobs initiatives. In just 366 days, both campaigns will more than likely begin a grueling all-day, all-night final marathon effort to climax their campaigns in the critical swing states. Most importantly, one political camp will probably know the election's outcome a few days early based on their sophisticated internal polling that deciphers political trends.

Photography issues noted

·

In response to "Lauren Studios under fire" (Nov. 1), as not only the Editor-in-Chief of the Notre Dame Yearbook, but a fellow senior, I understand the concerns voiced in Matt Jensen's letter, and I hope that I may have the opportunity to make a few clarifications and clear up any issues that have arisen.

Notre Dame's signature sportsmanship

·

At least since 1968, if not long before, the Notre Dame Band has always greeted the fans of the opposing team by playing their fight song before ours, then "America the Beautiful" then the national anthem. This display of true sportsmanship and welcome is a singular distinction of Notre Dame from any other university. I know from the opposing team's fans' responses that it is greatly appreciated and probably dulls the bad taste in their mouths when we win. I hope that this treatment of our guests doesn't get consumed by the creation of a place where its hard for our opponents to win.

Making South Bend a community

·

One of the best things about Notre Dame is that everything a student could possibly need is on campus. But it is also one of the worst because it separates us from the city that is our home — South Bend.

My Asian home at ND

·

With Asian Allure this Friday, Nov. 4, and Saturday, Nov. 5, I know the chaos of Asian Allure is coming down on everyone participating in the annual cultural show. Even with all the craziness this past week, I couldn't be happier being a part of Asian Allure 2011: Timeless. Coming from a town where Asian diversity is rare, I always grew up as "the Asian." It never bothered me because I didn't think my "Asian-ness" was such a big deal. Sure, my family had many Filipino traditions, but I sparingly invited my friends over for Filipino dinner. I wasn't ashamed of being Filipino, I just didn't think my Filipino ways were interesting enough to fully share with everyone.

Don't balance the budget on the backs of the poor

·

About how much of the U.S. budget do you think is spent on foreign aid? Twenty-five percent? Maybe 20 percent? Actually, foreign aid is less than 1 percent of the U.S. budget. Poverty-focused international assistance is a mere 0.6 percent of the U.S. budget, and it is in danger of being drastically cut due to the debt crisis.
