Notre Dame student senate passed a resolution in a special meeting Monday condemning hate speech in wake of recentprotests on campus.
The operative clause of the resolution read: “Resolved, the Student Senate condemns all hate speech, discrimination, or ill will done to any member of our Notre Dame family and calls upon the Notre Dame student body to recommit to protecting and caring for all members of our family.”
The resolution comes after recent campus protests on the same subject. On Thursday, students gathered in Sorin College to call for the end of parietals and hate speech on campus. The demonstration was the second held about parietals and hate speech in a week; in the first, students gathered in Stanford Hall for a sit-in stirred by reports of biased slurs on Nov. 15 and 16.
In the student senate’s last regular meeting on Wednesday, senators discussed the protests after off-campus secretary senior Patrick Paulsen and proxy for off-campus president senior Katie O’Sullivan broached the subject.
“There is a conversation going on about students’ rights as protesters, and then there’s the issue of what they’re protesting,” Paulsen said during the meeting.
The student senate will convene again after Thanksgiving break for its regularly scheduled Wednesday evening meetings.
