Former Irish swimming and diving coach Tim Welsh died Wednesday at his home in South Bend. He was 76 years old.
Welsh was at the head of the swimming and diving program for 30 years, coaching swimmers from 1985 to 2014. He coached both the men and women’s teams from 1985 to 1995, and then just coached the men until 2014, when he spent a season as interim head coach.
Under Welsh’s guidance, the Irish captured the program’s first Big East title in 2005. They would go on to complete the feat five more times during his tenure. Welsh received the National Collegiate and Scholastic Swimming Trophy, the College Swimming Coaches Association of America’s highest honor.
He also received the 2019 Notre Dame Monogram Club’s Jesse Harper Award, which recognizes a member for their commitment and involvement with the athletic department and the university as a whole.
Welsh was also honored for his special service to the American Swimming Coaches Association (ASCA) and the sport of swimming by receiving the ASCA’s distinguished Ousley Service Award in 2004.
