Mishawaka fire 5 miles from Notre Dame causes smoke scent on campus

Notre Dame Campus Safety notified students of a Mishawaka fire believed to be caused by inclement weather

This evening, fire crews were called to attend to a warehouse fire in Mishawaka.

16 News Now WNDU reported that crews were called around 5:30 p.m. to the 900 block of E. McKinley Avenue, but details regarding how the fire began and whether there were any injuries from the fire are not yet available. WNDU also reported that the cause of the fire had not yet been confirmed, but the building’s owner believed it was caused by a lightning strike.

The fire’s location is about 5 miles from campus.

At 7:21 p.m. Notre Dame students were notified via an email from Campus Safety that “There is a heavy smell of smoke on campus due to a fire in a commercial building in Mishawaka.

The email continued, “The smoke is not believed to be a health hazard, but it’s important you be aware of the source in case you smell smoke.”

The University's official Instagram story also displayed a message about the smoke, affirming the belief of the smoke to be non-hazardous. The story also maintained that if there were any updates, they would be posted on the University’s social media channels.

Saint Mary’s students were not notified about the fire.

The Observer was not able to confirm whether the fire has been extinguished. This story is ongoing.
