For those of you who have grown tired of the cookie-cutter criticisms leveled at on-campus living, fear not. I do have a bone to pick with dorm life, but I will abstain from attacking parietals, single-sex dorms or any number of easier targets. Instead, my complaint centers on musical practice spaces in dorms. Or rather, lack thereof.

I read Andrew Romano's letter, "Bring back the rallies" (Nov. 8), and I have to agree with him that the pep rallies are not that fun to go to, and I personally don't try very hard to go to them. However I disagree with his belief that the location of the pep rally is a major factor.

The Notre Dame student body is composed of essentially good, intelligent, compassionate and generous people who want to make a positive difference in the world. Unfortunately, we don't always act in appropriate ways. One particular decision that has caused a lot of hurt is the "Zahm's gay" chant. It goes, "Ole, ole, ole, ole, Zahm's gay, Zahm's gay!" This chant is hateful and intolerant toward the gay students at Notre Dame, and toward gay people everywhere.

I am writing in response to the Nov. 8 article entitled "The Bro Code" by Dr. G. David Moss. I believe Dr. Moss has used his opinion to shape the facts, rather than the other way around. While GOP presidential hopefuls have campaigned for months to replace President Obama, the president just recently shifted from governing mode into campaign mode while promoting his new jobs initiatives. In just 366 days, both campaigns will more than likely begin a grueling all-day, all-night final marathon effort to climax their campaigns in the critical swing states. At least since 1968, if not long before, the Notre Dame Band has always greeted the fans of the opposing team by playing their fight song before ours, then "America the Beautiful" then the national anthem. This display of true sportsmanship and welcome is a singular distinction of Notre Dame from any other university. I know from the opposing team's fans' responses that it is greatly appreciated and probably dulls the bad taste in their mouths when we win. I hope that this treatment of our guests doesn't get consumed by the creation of a place where its hard for our opponents to win.

With Asian Allure this Friday, Nov. 4, and Saturday, Nov. 5, I know the chaos of Asian Allure is coming down on everyone participating in the annual cultural show. Even with all the craziness this past week, I couldn't be happier being a part of Asian Allure 2011: Timeless. Coming from a town where Asian diversity is rare, I always grew up as "the Asian." It never bothered me because I didn't think my "Asian-ness" was such a big deal. Sure, my family had many Filipino traditions, but I sparingly invited my friends over for Filipino dinner. I wasn't ashamed of being Filipino, I just didn't think my Filipino ways were interesting enough to fully share with everyone.
