Given how last weekend's ACC Tournament went down, Notre Dame men's lacrosse must have been due for a game like Sunday's. At halftime of their first NCAA Tournament game, the top-seeded Irish trailed Albany 5-4. They had committed 11 turnovers — eighth of them unforced. The Kavanagh brothers had combined for just two assists. Unfocused, sloppy play had infected a team that just seven days before had looked the part of an unstoppable machine in the ACC Championship. As the game's midway point hit, the eyes of the lacrosse world descended on Arlotta Stadium and wondered, ”What's going on with Notre Dame?”

When Notre Dame women's lacrosse was at its best in the 2024 season, it found ways to win in the game's most pivotal moments. In their February defeat of No. 1 Northwestern, the Irish outscored the Wildcats 5-2 in the final quarter to win by four goals. Notre Dame's recent 10-game win streak included three consecutive one-goal victories. Even in the second round of last year's NCAA Tournament, the underdog Irish scored with 10 seconds left to stun Florida by a single goal.

The Observer piece on the student arrests on Thursday night painted the administration in a bad light. One might conclude from reading the coverage that the “rain-soaked summit that preceded the arrest of peaceful student protestors was a failure. I suggest a different way to interpret what transpired. Thursday gives us a glimpse into what potentially sets Notre Dame apart as a distinctively Catholic institution of higher learning.

After the Notre Dame men’s lacrosse team concluded its regular season with a hard-fought victory over No. 5-ranked Virginia, they played the Cavaliers again in the ACC Tournament semifinal. The second time around was not as hard-fought. It was utter dominance from the Irish from start to finish in undoubtedly their most impressive win of the season, one that sent a message to the rest of the nation, and especially to the winner of the Duke-Syracuse game on the other side of the tournament bracket.

In a May 1 interview with President Jenkins in The Observer, he commented on a letter he wrote to the Chicago Tribune in December 2022 about an editorial Dr. Susan Ostermann and I wrote in our capacity as scholars and experts in the Keough School on government regulation and reproductive health policy. The Observer, President Jenkins and many of my colleagues at Notre Dame have focused on this in relationship to academic freedom. But what hurt and distressed me the most was not the violation of my academic freedom. It was President Jenkins’s blatant disregard for the safety of me and my family, his unwillingness to communicate with me or respond to any of my safety concerns, and his failure to recognize that his actions invited and exposed me to more abuse and harassment.

While rectors live in all of the dorms on campus, and some dorms have a resident priest, there are two dorms that offer a unique adult presence: faculty in residence. Dunne Hall is the home to John Deak, a professor of Austrian history, and his wife Karen Deak, who worked in the IDEA Center. Additionally, Lyons Hall is the residence of Ed Hums, an accounting professor, and his wife Shirley Hums, who recently retired from her job in IT for athletics.

The transition from college to professional hockey is unlike that of any other major sport in America. Top players complete their collegiate careers with a team’s draft rights attached to them, bypassing the offseason drafts that dictate football, basketball and baseball. When those players finish their final college seasons in March or April, the National Hockey League season has less than a month remaining. Most teams look to either solidify their Stanley Cup contender status or evaluate younger talent for future seasons.

On March 19, 2024, Notre Dame International emailed all ND faculty announcing the Tel Aviv University (TAU)-Notre Dame Collaboration Grants. The email stated, “The University of Notre Dame and Tel Aviv University are pleased to continue and deepen their relationship” by expanding these grant programs. For members of the ND community working toward Palestinian liberation and the dignity and human rights of all people between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean Sea, this institutional collaboration is unacceptable. Just weeks after Father Jenkins called for a ceasefire and peaceful dialogue toward ending the current genocide in Gaza, expanding this program normalizes and entrenches relations with an Israeli institution that is complicit in the murder of more than 34,000 Palestinians in Gaza.

After winning its first national title in program history, the Notre Dame men’s lacrosse team continued to assert itself as the premier program in the country throughout the 2024 regular season. The Irish came into the season ranked No. 1 and finished the regular season in the same position, only ceding it briefly after an early-season slip-up against Georgetown, a loss they have since followed with an eight-game winning streak.
