If you have paid attention to the opinion section of The Observer recently, you may have noticed an overwhelming number of political commentaries being produced weekly. Trump, ICE and polarization are the subjects of countless articles — oftentimes regurgitating similar arguments from politicized mainstream media. I don’t mind this work; the point of writing in a public domain in this manner is to express ideas important to you. I read these articles, sometimes enjoy them and move on with my day. I assume the same for most of those who pick up student papers.

Dear Jonah,

The Notre Dame Chorale’s annual Christmastime performance of “Messiah” was conspicuously absent from the DeBartolo Performing Arts Center’s schedule this year, but fear not: A student-led version of the popular concert is on at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Mishawaka at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 5.

In Notre Dame’s first series against the Stanford Cardinal on Saturday night, junior running back Jeremiyah Love looked the part of a Heisman Trophy winner. The Irish’s greatest showman put on a spectacle, racking up 54 yards and ending the drive with a touchdown. The score moved Love past Pro Football Hall of Famer Jerome Bettis for the all-time single-season touchdown record at Notre Dame.

We are back from Thanksgiving break, and soon we will be away again for Christmas break. Traveling back and forth from Notre Dame to home gives us occasion to reflect on our life at Notre Dame. A (hopefully) loving and simple home can teach us how to bring the same love and simplicity into a campus environment that can be ambitious and chaotic.

This is the fifth installment of Meghan Sullivan’s series about DELTA, Notre Dame’s faith-based framework for a world of powerful AI.

We’re entering an era where environmental instability is no longer theoretical. It’s visible in rising temperatures, extreme weather and accelerating ecological loss. Shared threats should bring societies together. Instead, polarization widens, distrust grows and political identities harden in the face of climate change.

“We don’t hate women; we hate the victimhood cult that tells women they’re perpetual oppressed victims who need abortion and government handouts to succeed.”

On Nov. 19, I read The Observer column “An era of consensus,” written by Sam Marchand. I frankly found myself baffled by the reasoning by which Marchand asserts that the United States has reached consensus on Trump policy. I would like to discuss that here.

The Notre Dame men’s basketball team traveled to Las Vegas last week to participate in the Players Era Festival, which had a field of loaded talent. The tournament was created in 2024, and in its second year, the festival had 18 quality teams playing across three days. Notre Dame went 1-2 in their three games, but all were hard fought as the Irish showed they can compete with some of the best teams in the country.

Despite traveling 2,239 miles and operating on a three-hour time zone difference, Notre Dame fired on all cylinders in its 49-20 triumph over Stanford. The win virtually cements the Irish’s place in the College Football Playoff, marking their 10th consecutive victory following two early season defeats to Miami and Texas A&M.

Notre Dame put a bow on its regular season Saturday, posting its last statement for a bid in the College Football Playoff. With the Irish currently ranked No. 9 by the CFP Committee, the questions remain: Will the Irish hold their place through conference championship week, and do they deserve a spot at all?

In a game broadcast at 10:30 p.m. Eastern Standard Time, Notre Dame faced off against familiar foe Stanford in Palo Alto, California. The Irish thrived in the chilly air and posted a nearly straightforward 49-20 beatdown. Here are the key moments that led to their 10th and final regular season victory.

In some Notre Dame classes, students may look around them and see among the many college-aged students, a few students closer to the age of their parents. Often retired or semi-retired professionals, these students are usually fellows in Notre Dame’s Inspired Leadership Initiative, who engage with the University by auditing courses, attending lectures and performances and participating in campus life.

It was a late night in Purcell Pavilion as Notre Dame women’s basketball hosted Central Michigan on Monday, Nov. 24. The matchup against the Chippewas was a much needed breath of fresh air after the Irish’s gritty win over Southern California on Friday, Nov. 21, where the Irish beat their longtime rival in the final three seconds of the game thanks to a jump shot by junior guard Hannah Hidalgo, sealing their 61-59 victory.

Many Americans are — to massively understate — upset with Congress. The U.S. government went through the longest shutdown in American history for little gain, as the provisions in the shutdown deal are largely identical to what was proposed prior. The final bill also only funds the government until January, meaning we may very well get to go through all of this again. Deadlock in the legislative branch is certainly not new, but in the age of Trump, it’s made the experience all the more frustrating. Trump managed to halve the staff of the Department of Education and impose the totality of his tariff regime without Congressional approval. Our government is meant to be a collaborative act between multiple institutions representing the American people, but more and more it feels like a one-man show. Yet, there are thousands of government entities with the power to stand up to the executive when Congress sits down: state and local governments.

Style points came early and often for the Irish in South Bend against overmatched Syracuse on a clear and crisp fall afternoon. Notre Dame’s defense did not just set the tone in the matchup’s first minutes; it delivered the knockout blow in a 70-7 triumph. On two of the game’s first three possessions, the defense scored two pick-sixes off freshman walk-on quarterback Joseph Filardi, who started for a Syracuse team lost without injured starter and former Irish quarterback Steve Angeli. On the other, it forced a three-and-out, and the special teams pitched in with a score of its own.
